WGolf in Sacramento - winflop - 02-28-2022

Women's golf kicked off at the Gunrock Invitational in Sacramento earlier today and holds a 17 shot lead against an overall weak field after 36 holes today. #25 BYU is the only other Top 25 team in the field.

Stanford's -34 is a school record low for 36 holes, destroying the previous record of -25 the team set last year at NCAA Regionals (at home). Heck's -13 is also a school record low for 36 holes.

1. Heck -13
2. Zhang -10
T6. Englemann - 5
T12. Krauter -2
T31. Sturdza +1

T5. Seay (I) -5
T17. Reyes (I) -1
T22. Ye (I) E

Final round tomorrow.

Heck and Zhang are hands down the best 1-2 punch in the sport. Stanford will be heavily favored to win it all because of how strong they will be in the match play portion of the event (it's almost a given that they will breeze through stroke play at both regionals (at home) and nationals.

Krauter is also a very strong match play player. She won the British Women's Amateur in 2020.

It wouldn't surprise me to see two of Seay, Englemann, and Sturdza fill out the lineup at NCAAs. Angie Ye seems to not be playing as well, and she has not handled final round/match play pressure very well both last year and this fall.

Obliterating the field today.  With just a few holes to go, Stanford is -16 for the day and -50 for the tournament, for a 34 stroke lead over #2 Washington.  Next best round today is BYU at -9.

1 Heck -18
2  Zhang -14 (with an albatross on the par 5 15th hole)
T-4  Englemann -9
T-4 Seay -9,
T13 Krauter -3
T18 Strudza -2
T25 Ye +1
T432 Reyes +6

It will be interesting to see who gets tapped for the NCAAs with such firepower

RE: WGolf in Sacramento - winflop - 03-01-2022

Stanford sets an NCAA record finishing at -50. The previous record of -46 was held by LSU and the team's previous record was -28

They dominated the field, winning by 35 strokes. All five players finished in the top 20.

1. Heck -18 - school record and one shot off the NCAA record
2. Zhang -14
4. Englemann -9
T16. Sturdza -2
T16. Krauter -2

T5. Seay (I) -8
T35. Ye (I) +4
T42. Reyes (I) +6

RE: WGolf in Sacramento - Spiny_Norman - 03-01-2022

I wish they were playing this well against a stronger field. Iron sharpens iron. The better fields are in other parts of the country, but Stanford seems to prefer playing closer to home. They only play one spring tournament out of California and that will be in Phoenix. Then Pac 12s at Eugene CC, regionals at Stanford and NCAAs in Scottsdale.

I think your comment really misses the mark Norman. Take a look at the competition in their previous 4 tournaments:
- Lamkin Inviational (Feb 2022), 9 Top 25 teams
- Pac-12 Preview (Nov 2021), 6 Top 25s
- Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct 2021), 6 Top 25s
- Windy City Collegiate Challenge (Oct 2021), 8 Top 25s

With six regionals, on average there will be four top 25 teams at each. So 4 of the 6 events they've played have fields that are at least as tough as what they will face in NCAA regionals.

Also, as far as playing only on the West Coast (except for Chicago), NCAA regionals are at home and the finals are in Arizona. I'd say staying near home is a pretty good plan

I was only commenting on the spring schedule and was mainly thinking of the Gunrock tournament (only one other top 25 team, #25 BYU) and the upcoming Juli Inkster Invitational which had no ranked teams in the field last year.

However I fully trust Coach Walker to have the team ready to peak in May when it really counts.

RE: WGolf in Sacramento - akiddoc - 03-02-2022

Last summer I think most people who know Stanford sports were saying WGOLF and MGYM were the most loaded teams on campus. Looks pretty accurate. Obviously WWP and WBB looking really good as well, but the former two are the overwhelming favorites to take the NCAA championships.

Inkster field does look weak with only two ranked teams (Stanford & SJS) but a little lull in the schedule isn't a bad thing before the grind of Pac-12s, regionals, and nationals to end the season.

And if this week is any indication, it's not like the team is backing off one bit.

RE: WGolf in Sacramento - Spiny_Norman - 03-02-2022

Oklahoma State, runner up in the NCAA tournament last year and ranked 2nd behind Stanford after an undefeated fall season, has lost their top 2 players in the last week. Both entered the transfer portal.

RE: WGolf in Sacramento - BostonCard - 03-02-2022

The thing about golf is that weird things can happen in the match play format.  So, while I would expect Stanford to be at the top following championship play (though anything can happen in golf), all bets are off on match play.  I expect we’d be favored, but last year we lost in the first round despite being favored.

I don't think our team was as match-play tough last year and it showed. Also, Arizona was on fire and it almost carried them to a title (they lost in the finals).

This team reminds me of the men's 2019 championship team, only much stronger. In match play, Brandon Wu and Isaiah Salinda were an unstoppable 1-2 punch, both going 3-0. Only needed to find a win from one other player and they did. This rest of this team's lineup is so strong.

I honestly can't imagine them losing 3 matches to anyone, but it is golf...

Arizona lost in the semis to Ole Miss which went on to win the championship over Oklahoma St. It was the first time that Stanford lost to a school that did not go on to win the whole thing. In 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, Stanford lost in match play to the team that would win the national championship.
