RIP Nate Kirtman -

Very good RB at Washington High in 1963 when SI concluded an unbeaten season with a win in the City Championship game. Then a great RB in his senior season capped by many awards including AAA Back of the Year with a championship by the Eagles. He beat out Mike Holmgren and OJ Simpson for the honor.
A promising back at Stanford who retired before his senior season.
Obit in the Chronicle.

A man with the courage of his convictions. I remember him on Ralston's teams -- and when he suffered an eye injury, deliberately inflicted by some AH. Can't recall the game. I also remember the "Thom McAn" award. I had a pair of cheap Thom McAn shoes. I think they were a sponsor of the short-lived Don Sherwood TV show. Legendary KSFO radio personality when it was the premiere station in The City. When he showed up.

The obituary. The language is what appeared in the Chron. Wish the Stanford Historical Society had included him in their recent episode on Black football players at Stanford in the 60's.

I believe I overlapped in college with his son, Nate Kirtman III, who lived upstairs from me during my freshman year. He was the first and probably only Pomona College athlete to be drafted to the NFL, and he was D-III national champ in track (long jump or maybe triple jump?) On our football team, it was almost comical how many positions we had him playing - receiver, returner, sometimes RB or QB (?), and I want to say punter, too! (Yes, punter.) Apparently, he’s a successful entertainment industry exec now. If you Google “Nate Kirtman,” you will read all about the son. I had no idea that his father was a memorable player at Stanford. RIP.

San Francisco football back in the day. We never played out of conference. Bellarmine was the De La Salle of those days with SI a close second. But we never played them. We blasted OJ and Galileo in his junior season but had a very tough game against Washington and Kirtman. We clobbered them in the championship game. The next year Holmgren and Lincoln were the pick of everybody but Kirtman lead Washington to the title. He played both ways, returned kicks, etc.
I think he was part of Ralston’s great recruiting class. Washington, Buehler, Broughton and many others.
