MGolf hosts The Goodwin Thu-Sat - winflop - 03-23-2022

Men's golf hosts The Goodwin Thursday-Saturday. The tournament only includes two Top 25 teams, #9 Washington and #14 Stanford.

Stanford is fielding what is arguably it's strongest lineup of the year: Thorbjornsen, Vilips, Brown, Shimp, and Ng. I think it's the first time the top four have all played in a tournament together.

The tournament is named after Wally Goodwin, who coached the Men's team for nearly 20 years and recruited Tiger Woods as well as current head coach Conrad Ray, among many other great players. I actually knew Wally before he came to Stanford. When he was the head coach at Northwestern, he donated a leather tour bag and 10 lessons to Evanston HS's booster club auction. My mom bought it, and Wally not only became my first golf coach but infected me with the golf bug that has been a part of my life ever since. I still have the bag in my garage.

Sadly Wally passed away last year (not due to COVID), and tonight there is a celebration of his life that I will be attending.

Stanford's lineup should be its strongest. But they have not yet had a strong tournament in the spring - 9th (out of 19), 7th (out of 24) and 11th (out of 15). If they are going to build momentum leading up to regionals and the NCAAs, it better start this week.

Stanford is paired for days 1 and 2 with Oregon, Howard and Cal Poly. Each of those schools is coached by someone with ties to Stanford. Casey Martin (Oregon) and Phil Rowe (Cal Poly) played at Stanford and Sam Puryear (Howard) was an assistant coach under Coach Ray.

Agreed Spiny. They need to start building momentum toward regionals this week, at home, against a relatively weak field. Time to build some confidence and play three solid rounds.
