Women's Golf at Ping/ASU tournament - Spiny_Norman - 03-25-2022

The #1 ranked Stanford women's golf team plays its final tournament before P12s this weekend in Phoenix. The lineup is Zhang, Sturdza, Heck, Englemann and Krauter. Brooke Seay (#11 ranked player in the country) is sitting this one out.

The field includes #2 Oregon, #7 Virginia, #9 ASU and #10 Michigan.

Stanford took a while to get going on day 1 today. After 13 holes, they were +7 and 13 shots behind leader ASU. They went on a birdie barrage over the final 5 holes, with 10 birdies to finish at -3. This puts Stanford in 2nd place, 5 shots back of ASU and 1 shot ahead of Oregon, Northwestern and Baylor. ASU's top player Alexandra Forsterling shot a sizzling 66 (-6) which led the field.

The big head scratcher is the play of Rachel Heck, last year's college player of the year. She made no birdies and shot 79. Hope that she figures things out for tomorrow and Sunday.

Team results:
Rose Zhang -2
Aline Krauter - 1
Sadie Englemann - E
Caroline Sturdza - E
Rachel Heck - +7

We end up 3rd, 23 strokes behind ASU and 8 strokes behind OR.  I would categorize this as a bad result for this team.

Rachel Heck had 3 poor rounds (for her), Rose Zhang struggled on day 3, but on the bright side Aline Krauter had her best collegiate finish (4th). She's also a really strong match player which will be needed at NCAAs.

Next up for half the team is the Augusta National Women's Amateur, with five players plus incoming frosh Megha Ganne in the field - Heck, Zhang, Ye, Krauter, and Sturdza. I'm sure Condi will be there to cheer them on!

Also this weekend Brooke Seay will be competing in the LPGA major tournament in Palm Springs, the Chevron Championship (formerly the ANA Championship formerly the Nabisco Dinah Shore Championship).
