Tiger might play the Masters - winflop - 03-29-2022

Tiger's plane was spotted today at the Augusta, GA airport. Apparently he's going to play 4 consecutive days and if his leg holds up, he's playing.

RE: Tiger might play the Masters - JJJ - 03-29-2022

Apparently looked good playing all 18 holes.

The real question is: how will his game hold up?

I thought he was nearly at the stage where he would be a single-drive ceremonial driver.  This year's bunch are Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

The real question is whether he can play 4 days in a row on his still-recovering legs. If he can play, he'll be in the field

Exactly.  One round of 18 . . . maybe he feels okay.  But I suspect it will be progressively tougher to bounce back on Day 2 (and 3 and 4, if necessary).

What don't they let him use a golf cart?

I doubt Woods will be within 10 strokes of the lead after 36 holes. Anything's possible, of course, but this is unlikely. If he does make the cut more power to him, of course.

If only there were legal precedent for this…

I think Tiger could have a case given PGA v. Martin, but I will admit to not being a lawyer, and maybe the ADA would treat recovery from an injury differently than a chronic condition.

Note that the 10-strokes rule doesn't exist any more; since 2020 it's been low-50 players and ties only that make the cut.

Does it matter that it is not an incipient medical condition but a result of Tiger's own negligence?

It matters a ton. Martin got his exemption under the ADA. Injuries that are not permanent disabilities don't generally qualify

RE: Tiger might play the Masters - JJJ - 04-04-2022

Apparently, he played a well-attended practice round Sunday and his participation is a “game-time decision”—due to meet the press at 11am ET Tuesday according to The Athletic.

I’m not a lawyer, so this is only based on what I found googling the internet (always a fraught affair), but it appears at least one court case has ruled that a disability need not be permanent to be covered by the ADA.

https://www.laborandemploymentlawcounsel.com/2014/02/temporary-disabilities-no-need-to-worry-about-the-ada-right-think-again/

Quote: In the case of Summers vs. Altarum Institute Corp., No. 13-1645 (4th Cir. January 23, 2014), the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit answered the question, ruling that a temporary and severe impairment does in fact qualify as a disability under the ADA, and thus persons with such temporary and severe impairments are protected by the ADA.

Tiger has said many times he won't play if he cannot walk the course.

Given the publicity that has *practice* round generated, I don’t think Tiger would even have to cite the ADA for the PGA to give him an exemption to use a cart, but probably good for him not to ask for it.

Tiger riding a cart - will not happen.  Here's why:  During the discussion in 2000 when Casey Martin challenged the PGA, Tiger was on the record that Martin, his teammate in 1994, should not be allowed to use a cart.  No one in Augusta could ignore the hypocrisy.

Best of luck. I hope his legs hold out ok.  Tied for 10th at -1, which is astonishing.

Tied for 10th, four strokes back of the leader.  He's as good once as he ever was, perhaps.  Crossing my fingers for him.
