Stanford MVB update - Mick - 04-02-2022

Stanford's men's volleyball team has been playing with some mixed success of late.  In March, Stanford split with #1 UCLA, then split with #5 USC.  Thursday night, they were swept by #10 Grand Canyon, and they play Grand Canyon again today. Next weekend, BYU comes to play and the next weekend is the last weekend of the regular season, at Pepperdine.  Still, Stanford is dead last in the MPSF at 2-5.  They're 9-2 at home, 0-7 on the road and 1-1 at neutral sites.  It doesn't help that Stanford's superb player, Jaylen Jasper, graduated in 2021 and is now a graduate student playing for Pepperdine.  And doing quite well.

Considering the self-inflicted damage from cutting and then reinstating the sport, this is about as good a result as we could have expected.  It’s going to take at least four years, and probably more, to reverse the damage.

Right, we've talked about these six before.  Five of the six are with the Bay to Bay VC, based in the SFBA.  My son was on that team (2010 version) as were former Stanford players Brian Cook, Matt Aiello, Brandon Williams and Jarod Keller (son of the founder, brother of USC's head women's volleyball coach).  Last summer's version were an excellent team, finishing third at the Nationals as both 15 and 18 year olds (not sure there was a nationals when they were 16 and 17, due to the pandemic).

I think they're all excellent, at the top or close to the top of the incoming class.  I think they'll do really well.  If the setter steps up and the libero matures, they'll be quite good.

Thanks Mick. Always appreciate

Of the six listed, Luke McFall is actually a year older than the others, and decided to stick with the program.  He's a 6'9" middle, the position that takes the longest to mature, IMHO.  Very good add, and very happy that he's on the team.

One other thing...if memory serves, I don't believe Stanford has a starting senior.  The entire starting lineup comes back.  They've played in an up and down, inconsistent style that is...well, consistent with lack of repetitions.  If they get the reps over the next 10 months, they'll be a very strong contender.
