Mens Gymnastics - MPSF champs -

Today has been a bummer for Stanford sports.
Baseball lost to Oregon St 3-2 in 11 innings
Women's tennis lost to ASU 4-2
Softball lost to Utah 11-2
WWP lost to USC 10-8
Beach volleyball lost to Long Beach St 3-2 (then beat Cal Poly 4-1)
Men's volleyball lost to Grand Canyon 3-1
But defending national champs men's gymnastics dominated the MPSF championship over runner up Oklahoma, 424.250 to 417.300 (that's a very large margin). Stanford will face off against Oklahoma again at the NCAA meet in two weeks in Norman.
Men's gymnastics is definitely Stanford's best shot at an NCAA championship this year to keep the streak alive.

Oofta, but thanks to gymnastics.

Here is the report I put up on the other site. I watched the live stream.
Stanford puts up a massive 424.25 with 3 major falls and another minor one. Could have been 427 if guys had done what they usually do. Oklahoma hit 29 of 30 routines and scored 417.3. I don't think OU can score any higher. Going into this meet the highest score of the season was Stanford at 419. Malone not in top form but still won the all around title. Michigan put up a 413 at the Big 10 Championship yesterday. No one else is in the vicinity.

This was the single best display of men's gymnastics in NCAA history. The level of difficulty and execution by Stanford today has never been matched.

And on the subject of Stanford gymnastics, here's the high bar trying to kill Ian Gunther by breaking in half while he's swinging. I've seen clips of rings breaking and parallel bars breaking, but this is the first time I've seen a solid steel bar snap. He's one lucky dude for not getting injured

I try to watch the video, it partially grays out and I get this message: "Do you want to allow “facebook.com” to use cookies and website data while browsing “thecardboard.org”? This will allow facebook.com to track your activity" with two buttons, Don't Allow and Allow. When I click "don't allow", the video remains grayed out. If I replay it, I get the same message with the video grayed out. Lovely.
From what I can tell, pretty scary and very lucky.

Just asked my son (collegiate gymnast) if he had seen the video. Said yep, all the college gymnasts in the country saw it, but it is "not uncommon."

that's great--I knew you followed gymnastics and that your kid was a gymnast, but I didn't realize he was competing at the collegiate level. Where does he go? (and no worries if you'd rather keep that private). When people ask if I was on the Stanford Gymnastics team, I tell them that I was a walk-on for all of 2 weeks before accepting that a team bus accident was going to be needed if I were ever to be of any use to the #1 team in the country (with 2 national champions). So I walked off and became a cheerleader instead, which is sooooo much easier on the body.
I'm still gonna maintain that any equipment failure, but especially a high bar breaking is extremely rare.
