On The Farm today, MVB vs. BYU -
Mick - 04-09-2022
Stanford's MVB team put together an impressive performance against BYU last night, winning in straight sets, 29-27, 25-20, 25-22. Admittedly, it's not the BYU of old -- they're 3-6, same as Stanford, but BYU has always been a tough match for the Cardinal, winning 30 of 44 matches to date.
Stanford had just 28 overall errors. 6'6" OH Will Rottman had 18 kills on 25 attempts and three service aces, he was an all-MPSF frosh/All-MPSF HM and All-MPSF Academic team back in 2020. His younger brother Alex will be on the team next year. 6'8" MB Nathaniel Gates had 8 kills in 9 attempts, he's also MPSF All-Academic.
Stanford is 11-11 with today's Maples Pavilion match against BYU and two matches at 5-4 Pepperdine to close out the season. MPSF quarterfinals are on Wed., April 20 ,#1 seed gets a bye, #2 plays #7, etc. Championship is on April 23. Host is typically #1 overall seed, which is UCLA this year. Interestingly, UCLA is 18-3 with only one league loss, and that was against Stanford on March 12. BTW, Stanford is 10-2 at home and 0-8 on the road.
In two years, the geographic nature of Stanford's team will have changed, at least somewhat. Right now, there are
zero Northern Californians on the team. The roster is dominated by eleven Southern Californians and a sprinkling of players from Texas, Canada, and Illinois. Five of the six incoming players are from the San Francisco Bay Area, including two from Bellarmine, one from Amador Valley, one from Christopher HS in Gilroy, and one from Head-Royce in Berkeley.
There were 630 in attendance at the BYU match yesterday. See you at Maples at 6 p.m. tonight!
