OT - H W Brands? - Genuine Realist - 04-22-2022

Anyone know this guy? He graduated from Stanford in 1975, and now holds an endowed chair in History at the University of Texas.

He's become an unbelievably prolific American history writer, the quality of which books ranges from the very good to the excellent. I just finished 'American Colossus', an overview of the years 1865-1895. Balanced and centrist. I much prefer it to the Oxford history, entrusted to a Stanford professor, Richard White, and not very impressive.

I am curious what sort of impression he made way back when.

Never read him, but thanks for bringing him to light.  There simply isn't enough time to read all the history books I would like to read and I have ben at it a long, long time.

His son Hal is a brilliant scholar at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, where I went to grad school. Eleven years after I got my master’s I came very close to going back to SAIS to work on a PhD under Hal but ultimately took another professional opportunity. A week or two ago my wife and I were watching Ken Burns’ documentary on Benjamin Franklin and I got a kick out of seeing HW Brands featured.

Met him last month at the Tucson Festival of Books, where he was part of a panel discussing the polarization of the American electorate. He was about to take off but I talked him into staying until my wife could purchase his book (Our First Civil War) and get it signed. Had a nice conversation while waiting; he seemed like a good guy and obviously smart. He also does a lot of commentating on CNN.

Don't know too much about history, but have a little bit of experience with the Theodore Roosevelt branch. He is very well respected in that world.

Is it just me, or does he sound like Ron Howard?
