Say goodbye to North & South - OutsiderFan - 05-18-2022

The Pac-12 will no longer have divisions and it's Football championship game will pit the two teams with the best win % against each other.

How will this impact scheduling?

RE: Say goodbye to North & South - msqueri - 05-18-2022

Whoa, big news! Just read the release. No impact on scheduling for 2022 but will immediately make the conference championship the top two teams rather than having anything to do with divisions. Beyond 2022 it could (I imagine would?) have an impact on scheduling.

Processing this now and haven't given much thought to implications for Stanford. Would be interested in others' thoughts. My immediate gut reaction is this is designed for the second best team in the conference in a given year, which would have been extremely relevant for Stanford much of Shaw's tenure but not so much recently. You've got to win at least six conference games for this change to affect you.

I really hope we get to keep on playing the other 3 CA schools annually.

If so, the biggest change will be that we'll see the PNW schools less often on the schedule.

maybe three scheduling pods

1.  the four CA school
2.  the four PNW schools
3.  the four others

play all three in your pod each year and rotate through the other 8

Yes, that would make sense. But what would the rotation look like? It'd be easy to do with the 9-game schedule (playing 3 out of 4 in each of the other two groups) or 7 games (playing 2 out of 4 in each of the other two groups.) But a little tougher with the 8-game schedule the league is probably targeting to be able to schedule "alliance" games against the Big Ten and ACC.

RE: Say goodbye to North & South - needle - 05-18-2022

My first thought was that this would make it easier for the conference to expand. No haggling with any potential new schools about what division they would go in.

Of course, should the Big 10 successfully raid the Pac, the conference could contract more easily as well.

RE: Say goodbye to North & South - Phogge - 05-18-2022

Best schedule would be to never play Utah.

RE: Say goodbye to North & South - fullmetal - 05-18-2022

^ or Oregon

Except aren't we 2-2 in the last four years against the Ducks (granted the two wins are
two of the most epic comebacks in rivalry history; Cristobal handing us games on a platter
also helped)? But the scoreboard says we are
winning the series since 2017.

RE: Say goodbye to North & South - Phogge - 05-19-2022

Stanford has done well against Oregon considering the UO has been the best team in the PAC overall since the Carroll Trojans. Very entertaining games too... 2009, 2010, 2012-13, 2015, 2018.

Utah is another matter and a big part of that are gigantic linemen on both sides of the ball. Of course Utah has an edge in getting Pacific Islander LDS talent. I’d like to see the Big 10 (what a joke with however many teams) take in Colorado and Utah and make the PAC truly a coastal conference (with an Arizona flavor).

I’m over the “we have to play UCLA and SC every year” mantra. Just play your rival and rotate the rest. Play eight conference games too, at least be on a schedule par with the evil SEC.

RE: Say goodbye to North & South - winflop - 05-19-2022

I could take or leave Colorado & Utah. I don't see where adding them has really done much of anything to boost the conference.

I wonder if this change could actually result in conferences going back to 10 teams, with 9-game schedules where you play everyone every year? Yeah, I can dream...

I propose the third pod be named "Miscellaneous".

How about "Flyover"?

No that's for when we add some Big XII refugees.

At the same time, the NCAA is waiving the 25 scholarship limit for the next 2 years.

I don't think there's really any advantage to giving up our annual series with the LA schools. If we only have one fixed game, we'd still have 10 conference opponents to rotate through. Neither an 8-game schedule nor a 9-game one does that neatly.

You can actually go all the way up to 5 fixed games (three of which would presumably be the other CA schools) and then rotate the other 6, playing three in any given year. And that's still with just an 8-game conference slate. And it would result in a 4-year rotation playing everyone both home and away.

Though I still prefer the 9-game slate with just the 3 fixed games.

Too many programs under (or way under) the 85-scholarship limit due to transfers out (primarily) without the ability to replenish and fully stock the roster.

Does this mean Stanford can or will take more than 85 and might be able to take fliers on some guys they might not offer scholarships to, particularly at the DL position?

RE: Say goodbye to North & South - Giants - 05-22-2022

I don’t believe the waiver of the 25 annual limit includes permission for schools to exceed the 85 overall limit.  The waiver does allow schools that are hit hard by transfers to fully replenish their inventory of athletes on scholarship to the 85 limit.

Quite frankly, I think it is a rare instance of the NCAA making a correct decision.
