NBA draft - PVTree - 06-24-2022

Duke with 4 first rounders and 1 second rounder!!? Wow, 5 drafted players, and major underachievement.

Johnny Juzang not drafted while Peyton Watson is? Looks like JJ should have turned pro the previous year when he was hot after the final four run.

P12 with 3 first rounders...2 AZ and 1 Polar Bear.

Wait ... Why are UCLA bruins polar bears?  I had to check the draft results to see who this might be.

Against all odds, Santa Clara had their first player drafted since Steve Nash was drafted #15 overall in 1996.  The Oklahoma City Thunder drafted Jalen Williams with the 12th selection in the first round after a strong junior year (18.4 ppg) and a strong combine (he was top five in three of the eight combine measurements, and five of the eight for guards). He was the second highest SCU draft pick in the history of the NBA draft after the immortal Dick O'Keefe (9th overall selection in 1947 -- technically the BAA draft, not the NBA Draft)

Interesting trivia: Oklahoma's second round draft pick, #34 overall was Jaylin Williams of Arkansas. Two draftees, same draft, same names (almost).

Gonna be very interesting to see how the kid from Gonzaga, Chet Holmgren, does. He’s a unicorn athletically and from a skills perspective.  But he’s about 180 pounds at 7’1. Putting 50 pounds on him will not be easy.  Some can never do it.  If he doesn’t gain weight id normally say he will get pounded in the paint. But today’s NBA does not have all that many low post scorers. Certainly not traditional or post scorers. And he will be playing in a five out offense that  will utilize his skills.  I cannot recall a 7 foot player with his skill set and body type coming into the league.  So I felt coming into the draft he was the guy with the highest ceiling but also the biggest risk of any potential top-five pick.

Shawn Bradley was kind of similar to Holmgren in the key, but I don't recall a perimeter shot. He never gained enuf muscle to become a force, and suffered a bunch of injuries.

Manute Bol throwing up 3 pointers is another 7 footer + that never got any weight on his body albeit not as talented as Holmgren.

One talented seven footer who he could try to emulate is Dirk Nowitzki

Not a similar skill set.

Bol played 10 years, led the league in blocked shots twice.  Bradley played 12 years.
