Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - d4cohn - 06-25-2022

Rising junior Michael Thorbjornsen is currently T8 at the 3rd round of the Traveler's Championship in CT.
Great showing so far from the All-American.

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - Phogge - 06-25-2022

Now tied for second, nine under after 5.

Xander tees off 10:55 PDT, 14 under

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - winflop - 06-26-2022

T7 going into the final round at -11, six shots off the lead. Paired with Webb Simpson today

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - Hulk01 - 06-26-2022

Now two behind the leader, three other golfers ahead of him.

He's solo second now. He has a legitimate chance at Special Temporary Membership on PGA Tour for the rest of the year/the next 5-10 events. And if he would earn enough FedEx Cup Points if he had membership to finish T125 for the full season, he gets full exemption on the PGA Tour for next year (at which point I think he should go pro, as much as it would be great to see what he could do on next year's team).

If somehow he wins, he get a full two year exemption (on top of full membership through the rest of the year).

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - d4cohn - 06-26-2022

Michael finished -15, which was good for solo fourth. I think his finish today
will at least give him more PGA Tour opportunities this summer (via sponsor exemptions/temporary status etc.).
And he should get an invite back to the Traveler's Championship next year too with his finish.
It is a Top 5 for Michael, which is an unbelievable performance.

Special Temporary Membership is now earning enough points to finish in the Top 150. Finishing 4th today earned him 135 points. Last year, 150th place in the standings was 287, so he'd likely need to play and make the cut in at least another half-dozen events unless he has more top 10s. Could he do it? Absolutely, but it won't be easy

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - akiddoc - 06-27-2022

ESPN interviewed him. He says he'll be back at Stanford in September.

I don’t follow golf but I did come across this article about how he doesn’t hesitate to ask Rose Zhang for advice. Card helping Card!

Yes, the drop from solo second to solo fourth in terms of potential points was big. The two guys that finished T2 got 245, which basically would have put him there on that tourney alone (plus he surely would have gotten some sort of invite/status to at least this week's event, which he could get even now with his solo 4th). If he had finished solo second as he was potentially tracking for before his back nine stumbles, he would have gotten the points on that event alone. Plus there are now at least 10+ guys at top of FedEx Cup standings who left the tour for LIV golf, so the thresholds for making 125, 150 this year are going to be a lot lower than last year.

He's not available this week. He's playing for Team USA in the Palmer Cup in Switzerland. But I could see him get a couple sponsor invites to the five tournaments left on the calendar before the FedEx Cup playoffs start.

Only other amateur tournament that he's for sure playing is the US Amateur which isn't until mid-August.

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - d4cohn - 07-29-2022

Michael Thorbjornsen's follow-up to the Traveler's Championship on the PGA Tour was a bit more difficult; Michael finished his second round at +3 overall, and will miss the cut in Detroit. Alums Brandon Wu and Patrick Rodgers (both all but assured of retaining their PGA cards for next season) are delivering strong starts to the tourney, and will almost undoubtedly make the cut. Alum Joseph Bramlett will likely miss the cut (and likely will need to compete in the Korn Ferry tour finals to retain his PGA Tour Card for next season).

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - winflop - 07-29-2022

Bramlett has been in the 140s the previous couple of years which gets him a provisional PGA Tour card. That got him into some events but not all. But at 170 he won't have that provisional card and will have to Monday qualify for any event. He will likely spend the majority of next year on the Korn Ferry tour.

Really excited to see Brandon Wu next season. He clearly found something this year. Also Maverick McNealy is currently in the Top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings. Just a matter of time before he breaks through and wins a couple tournaments.

I hope you are correct about McNealy.  He and Rodgers seem to have a propensity for putting up big numbers when in the hunt.  McNealy has passed by Rodgers in the FedEx points standings by a bunch and seems the most likely of the Stanford guys on the tour to finally win one outside of Tiger.  Wu is awfully consistent and might surprise us all.

Ryder Cup possibility...not 2023, but 2025.

Brandon Wu tied for 1st after two rounds, great opportunity for him if he can hold it together the next two rounds.  I always thought McNealy was a better talent, but Wu has been playing quite well.  Looking forward to watching him on TV today.

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - winflop - 08-06-2022

Brandon has really pulled his game together this year. Mav struggling of late but is still #30 in the FedEx Cup standings while Brandon is #83 but likely to rise several spots depending on his finish this week, which is the final week for the standings. If Brandon wins he jumps to #24.

Brandon is currently tied for the lead but under a weather delay. They may not finish the round today which means he would be out early tomorrow morning to finish and then back to play the final round later in the day.

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - d4cohn - 08-06-2022

Some outstanding shots from a pair of Stanford alums: Joseph Bramlett with the hole-and-one (for eagle), and Brandon Wu with the eagle from the fairway.

Brandon is tied for the lead, and can get an additional year exemption beyond the exemption for next year that he has already locked up with a win. Bramlett will undoubtedly miss the Top 125 in the Fedex Cup, and will have to re-gain his card in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals (and otherwise be fully exempt on Korn Ferry Tour for next year).

RE: Stanford Men's Golf-PGA Tour - slide - 08-07-2022

finished tied for 8th.

amazed at Wu's golf transformation.  at this week at least, he hit it 318 on average off tee -- about 15 short of Patrick Rodgers.  Wu was not this long in college.  good to see.  he manages his ball pretty well around the course.  improve the getting into the hole part and he'll have a really nice career.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 08-07-2022

Really strong play this week glad to see him coming into his own on tour. Hopefully he can make it to the second week of the FedEx Cup. He'd have to do something very special to make it to Eastlake though.
