It's hard to read too much into this game as 1) this was not a highly-ranked opponent, 2) this was the first game and a lot of players with limited (or no) experience competing with Stanford got minutes, and 3) Andrea Kitahata had not returned from the U20WWC yet, but here's my thoughts...
1) it was rough not seeing Katie Meyer back there in goal. I see there's no #19 on the roster. Don't know if that's just for this season or permanent.
2) While the defense looked disorganized at times (could have easily given up 2 goals had the opponent just shot straight), that was not unexpected for the first game with this young group. On the plus side, freshmen defender (and #1 recruit) Elise Evans demonstrated she has a higher gear than almost all of the players on that field. I'm excited to see how Paul Ratcliffe takes advantage of that in the years ahead.
3) I was happy to see junior Amy Sayer score. She's had caps with the Australian senior national team and I've been expecting her to become one of the stars on this team. But she only had 2 goals and 2 assists in 19 games last season. She also was great in helping us maintain possession. My money's on Amy being a key driver of our success going forward.
4) Junior Samantha Williams is another player I've expected to make an impact on this team. At the club level she was utterly dominant (alongside teammates Trinity Rodman and Reilyn Turner). She had 2 goals and an assist, which matches her total from all of last season. She has the talent (and speed) to be involved in goals almost every game. Fingers crossed we see her at the center of many celebrations to come.
4) Beside Evans, Ratcliffe also started freshmen Allie Montoya (f) and Jasmine Aikey (m). Both got shots on goal, which is a good sign, as is Ratcliffe's trust in starting them. Their high recruiting rankings (3 and 6, respectively) seem justified. Interestingly, it was a fourth freshman, sub Lumi Kostmayer (f), who earned the first goal for this stellar class. She scored on a very impressive hustle play where Kostmayer was able to get to the ball (on a slow defensive passback) just before the keeper and without fouling. Very athletic. Looked like a play Jaeln Howell might make. (See the video in the Daily article linked above.) If our 4th-best recruit can continue to make plays like that, watch out! (Although she didn't get the assist, Samantha Williams' hustle initiated the defensive scramble that lead to Kostmayer's goal. Again, just a tremendous night for her.) Freshman Aki Yuasa also got a good, productive number of minutes off the bench.
5) So wonderful to see both Paulson twins back on the pitch. They were both seriously injured within minutes of each other in the USC game in spring 2021 (part of the delayed/COVID season) and had missed all of 2021/22. Catherine was particularly active, getting 6 shots, the most of any player in the game, including a PK that rattled off the post. She'll make some of those shots later in the season. Keep shooting Catherine!
6) Both keepers looked okay, but weren't tested much, unlike Sacramento State's keeper. who had 15 saves!
7) With all the caveats mentioned above, this team looked way underranked at #21 in the pre-season coaches' poll. (Conversely, USC seems overranked at #15, having just lost 0-3 to unranked Purdue yesterday. Still, just the first game, and they'll be more dangerous once Simone Jackson gets back).

Good game vs. the Chinese National team. I thought the Chinese were slightly better, but Stanford managed to win 1-0 in an enjoyable back and forth game.
One thing that irked me was that the National Anthem was not played before the game. It's the first time ever in my life that I remember that the anthem was not played at a sporting event from high school on up that I've attended.

It had to be, given how skilled the Chinese team was in possession and passing. Our depth was critical in that we have many experienced players and excellent frosh, and there was no appreciable drop-off with large substitutions. We played 19 different players, including 5 frosh for 270 total minutes among them. If we play every game with that level of defensive effort, we will be a very tough team to play against.

Maybe we didn’t want to play the PRC’s national anthem as well? Of course, that raises the question of why we would have scheduled the PRC national team, instead of someone like Australia, where we might have been happy playing both anthems.

Stanford's backline is continues to be fantastic lead by Senior Wesley and Freshman Evans who are both superstars. I love how aggressive Wesley is and always involves her self in the attack. Evans is quite comfortable and so calm with the ball. She will be fun to watch for years to come. The depth of this team is amazing and like the previous poster said, no drop-offs when substitutions are made. It's quite a luxury to have so many highly recruited players just itching to get some playing time. Any idea why Wheeler hasn't see much playing time? Wasn't she the #1 recruit or at least top five recruit in her class?
Overall, the game was fun to watch with both teams having opportunities to watch. Campbell made a fantastic save. China's passing was fantastic. Stanford could have won this game 2-0. During a counter attack, Aikey decided to keep the ball and take the shot when Doms and Montoya were both available for an easy chip since both of them only had one defender to beat. Freshman mistake. Excited to watch more games especially with Kitahata's return.

According to this Daily article, she was the #1 recruit in 2020; no idea why she hasn't played more. She did not play at all in our first two games this season.
Evans is the real deal, following in the footsteps of Alana Cook and Naomi Girma (she even has Naomi's number--2). Doesn't mean she won't make a freshman mistake or two, but she was impressive against China.
China was simply an opponent of opportunity: they are training and playing games in California for the month of August. Australia was not an option for us to play. BTW, the local Chinese community came out in force for this game.

China also played that school across the bay to a 2-2 tie the day before. I haven’t compared box scores to see if they used substantially the same players in both games. If they did, their physical conditioning is impressive, considering the quickness with which they played.

It's never made much sense to me to play the anthem for anything other than a match between national teams.
We have a player from Australia on our roster, according to the gostanford site. So it would have been interesting for her to line up against Team Australia, I bet.

I grew up in Brazil. Games between Brazilian teams were not preceded by a national anthem. But games between national teams were preceded by national anthems, and you knew this was a special game involving your country's team and your pulse quickened. That was a long time ago and my memory is not clear on matches between club teams from two different countries, but my recollection is that there were no national anthems either.

Evans is quite comfortable and so calm with the ball.Naomi Girma's injury 2 seasons ago was doubly harmful, because we not only lost Girma but had to move Wesley to center back, so we lost her aggressiveness in the attack from the wing. I was worried with Girma graduating that we might lose that again, but it looks like Evans is more than capable in the middle. Evans and Wesley should be a great combo for us this season.
