Men's Soccer kicking off season today - vs. Villanova @ 7pm - VB Card - 08-25-2022

Men's Soccer team has their first official game tonight, after winning 2 exhibitions last week (3-1 vs. Sonoma State and 2-0 vs. San Fran). 7 pm vs. Villanova

Shame that Stanford doesn't have #22 Santa Clara on the schedule.  Might be SCU's preference, they don't have any Pac-12 teams on their schedule this season after tying both Stanford and Cal last year.

This has been the best passing Stanford team I've ever seen. It's only the first half but I swear they've connected on more passes in the first 45 than all of last season.

Every year I critique Gunn's style of play and how it's just lob ball and hope the defense can hold a shutout. I'm hoping this first half is something the Cardinal can keep up for the remainder of the season.

No way they finish 4th in conference behind OSU, Washington, and Ucla. I'd say 1st or 2nd place.

I agree! The passing and dribbling has been more crisp. The team is playing with great energy and they seem to be quicker. The style of play is more exciting so far.  The defense is playing well

The middle of the field play is so much better already

Yay! Stanford beats Nova 1-0.

Fantastic win against SMU 3-1. SMU was not ready for Stanford’s high pressure style. Game got very physical and officiating was inconsistent.

The officiating was horrific! Missed a handball on SMU in the box as well as the keeper stepping out of the box with possession of the ball just to name a couple instances. Like the last game Stanford looked unbeatable in the firs half but had a drop off in the second.

Stanford's pressing paid big dividends as it was responsible for the first two goals.  The third goal was a masterful set piece shot by a freshman.  Against Villanova, a different freshman took the shot in a similar area of the field.  Clearly Jeremy Gunn does not consider seniority in assigning important tasks.

I too was dismayed by the officiating; in particular, the extent to which the referee allowed SMU to grab the Stanford players when the SMU player was beaten.  I don't recall seeing such clutch and grab to anywhere near the extent it happened in this game.  To a lesser degree, Stanford also got away with impeding the SMU player after the Stanford player was beaten by the initial movement of the ball, but much less so in the (likely biased) eye of this observer.  As a general principle, the failure to enforce the adage of "play the ball, not the man" significantly gums up the game, as it makes it that much harder to develop any offensive flow, and the soccer can devolve into a game of pinball.  Were I refereeing a men's college soccer game, I'd tell both teams that I will be closely calling any clutch and grab, and that any repeated or blatant behaviors will prompt a yellow card.

Stanford is the most physical team in the country and it must be very frustrating to play against a very aggressive style of play if you're not used to it. I imagine if I was the opponent I would be tempted to get a yellow card for retaliating in some capacity.

Stanford went from being unranked to #3 in the United Soccer Coaches Ranking. That's quite the jump.

I think that’s only the fourth goal allowed by Stanford, which stays unbeaten at 6-0-3.

Interestingly all six goals in the match came in the second half.

Cal had a player ejected and played one player short for about 50% of the second half, the score at the time was 2-1.

Last night's "Clasico" was a fantastic game.  Over the first 60 minutes it looked just like the recent games versus San Diego State and UCLA in which Stanford dominated possession and shots, but had nothing to show for it.  Multiple missed opportunities for the taking.

Then suddenly it was a gaolapalooza.  And Cal completely melted down. Six or so of their players got yellow cards.

Here's the link for the game on Youtube.  It's worth watching the first half for the build-up for the second, but most of the action comes from the last 30.
