They have a subscription for BTN+. You can pay for one month and cancel. It's the only option I know of.

If you don't have BTN network on your tv then BTN+ is the online service you can sign up for to stream on your computer. It's like watchespn.com but for BTN.
Just check to make sure the game is going to be broadcast live before you sign up. If I recall correctly some games were delayed or only available to watch after the game finished.

It used to be that some events were only available if you paid directly for BTN+, not just if you had BTN in your cable package. Did that change?

No, still this way. Today’s WSoc against NW and tomorrow’s WVb against PSU are both available on a cable package that includes BTN. But Saturday’s WVb against Minnesota is only available streamed on BTN+, subscription required.

I watched some of the game. I don't follow soccer. It seemed like Stanford could work the ball 2/3 the way down the field. In the final third of the field they struggled with play-making and pass location. Unless unranked Northwestern turns out to be really good, this might not be the year of the Cardinal. Hopefully the team and coaching staff can use the loss to improve.

We had difficult completing passes and settling the ball. The field surface seemed like it was turf instead of natural grass. I wonder if we had difficulty adjusting to the speed of the ball.

yes it's turf, but all of our players have experience playing on that surface. Only one shot on goal for us. I suspect that Northwestern's assistant coach, Rich Manning, after coaching against us as head coach at Utah for many years, was able to give them a better defensive plan than most of our non-conference opponents can muster. IIRC, we always won vs. Utah and Manning, but the scores were close.
Our best teams in the recent past have had an early stumble which helped them in the end.

I somehow stumbled into a one hour trial period of BTN on Fox on my computer. Then I switched to my iPad, and that got me 5 more minutes. To my surprise, I then logged in on my iPhone and was granted another hour. On the other hand, soccer on an iPhone 8 with bad eyesight is worth the price I paid.
As to the outcome, I think NW is way better than their ranking (unranked). They reportedly took #19 Xavier to the woodshed recently, per the announcers. And the players looked skilled and savvy. I think they're a better than Penn State.
Soccer on turf is a different game than on a quality grass field. A much worse game. Even when played on the much improved turf as compared to when I played decades ago. The ball moves way too fast, which in effect shrinks the field considerably. Stanford had trouble adjusting, I think, but they had a much better 2nd half, even as they struggled to finish. I still believe they are a top 10 team. With that said, the tougher game and more challenging field conditions made it easier to discriminate the skill level of the Stanford players, and as a rule, the more talented players skewed young. Paul Ratcliffe has developed a pattern of starting Greubel, Williams, and Sayer at forward, and then subbing in Kostmayer, Montoya, and Kitahata, and I think the second group is more effective. As well, Jasmine Aikey deserves more playing time.
But this is just one game viewed in miniature, so I make these statements with even less conviction than usual.

In the 5 minutes I was able to see, we had trouble keeping possession, probably related to the two things you mention: NW is good, and the speed of the dry turf (which they haven't played a game on this year,--*USF's turf field was dripping wet which slowed it down). Though they should have been practicing on it at home this week :)

The Northwestern game reminded of the USWNT's 1-0 loss to Canada in the Olympics (or our 1-0 loss to Pepperdine in the 2019 Championship season). Northwestern just sat back and disrupted what we wanted to do on offense and then we gave up an unfortunate penalty on one of their counter-attacks. Not too worried about the result. We'll learn from this.

Looks like Doms and Kitahata didn’t play?

Similar strong style/body type, but I would say Lumi is a much better player than Haley. Haley benefited tremendously from playing alongside Macario (see how she did after Macario left). There isn't a similar threat on the current team (though lots of pretty good weapons!).

I agree that everyone benefits from playing alongside Macario, but Haley was also dealing with injuries. She was drafted #7 in the NWSL, deferred to play another year at Stanford, but was only able to play limited minutes in about 1/2 the games. She still hasn't played in any NWSL regular season games and I haven't seen any news on her. If anyone knows let me know! I loved watching her play.
Speaking of injuries, I assume that Kitahata's limited minutes so far (and total absence in the last game) is due to an injury. Ratcliffe never seems to explain what's going on injury wise. I don't recall he ever announced that the Paulson twins would miss the entire season last year. And in Macario's sophomore season, I don't recall Ratcliffe ever explaining why she only had 13 starts. I know it's college, but it's still weird when you see some of the top players in a sport just disappear without explanation.
Anyway, back to Lumi's terrific start. She now has 7 goals and 1 assist in her first 8 games. Compare that to some of these Stanford greats:
Catarina Macario 8 goals, 4 assists in 1st 8 games (Cat didn't have her 1st hat trick until her junior season)
Sophia Smith 4 goals, 2 assists in 1st 8 games
Christen Press 8 goals, 6 assists her entire freshman year (21 games)
Kelly O'Hara 9 goals, 2 assists her freshman year (17 games)
Marcie Ward 14 goals, 14 assists her freshman year (21 games)
Lindsay Taylor 16 goals, ? assists her freshman year (25 games)

She was drafted #7 in January 2021, so the last game played was the 2019 championship. She then played the spring 2021 (rescheduled from fall 2020) and fall 2021 seasons. Agree that injuries may have significantly limited her as well. Another player comparison for Lumi that I thought of was Taylor Uhl. She does seem to be in good company as far as her first 8 games go though, and she doesn't even play 90 minutes/game!
The injury situation is interesting. I'm not sure Ratcliffe/Stanford has ever announced any injuries. Is there even a means for them to do that? It's not like they have weekly or post-game press conferences like football/basketball do.

Santa Clara (2-5) at Stanford tomorrow night. All of SCU's losses were by shutout. All of SCU's wins are on the road. And Stanford is 7-8...my guess is a Stanford win, 3-0.
