Water Polo is off to a 10-0 start, and I think the closest game was an 11-7 win at Loyola Marymount last week. The latest was a 19-3 laugher against LMU in the opening round of the 16-team MPSF invite.
Things get significantly more interesting starting tomorrow with #4 Pacific who beat UCSD 14-11. If we win, we take on the winner between #1 Cal and #8 UCSB in the semifinal.

It’s 11-11 vs cal late in the game
RE: MWP cruising -

#4 Stanford beats #1 Cal 12-11
I only got to watch part of the 3rd and all the 4th. I believe it was 7-7 at the half and 10-10 after 3.
Cal looked very good. Their goalie blocked a penalty shot, and saved a couple of near goals in the 4th Q.
I guess Stanford had more heart, or more luck.
(The announcer on the live stream gave the wrong final score. 12-11 is correct.)

Heard that there was to be more polo on the Farm today, as well as a ton of other happenings. Alas, just got a call telling us not to come, power is out all over campus, kinda like with our football team. . . .

Thanks, that explains why the
Live Stream is dark. Water polo doesn't really need power beyond the timer's table, so I guess they could be playing. I could see them turning away fans (no lights in bathrooms, etc.).
PG&E doesn't show a big outage at Stanford. They show
an outage for 1 customer on Campus Drive near Junipero Serra, out from 8AM, expected repair is 1:30PM.

The website has been updated. Stanford plays UCLA for the championship at 3PM. It will be available on Live Stream.

Stanford is 100% reliant on it's own power sources. . ..

Watching the terrible live feed and the online stats, I think it is 7-7 after 3 quarters. There is no scoreboard showing and no commentary other than an announcer calling out each goal scored.

All Right Now!
Despite being the
MPSF invitational, not every member of the MPSF in men's water polo took part in this 16-team tournament. Austin College and Penn State Behrend were not here. Though the arrangement we have with those schools is that they join us for the MPSF conference tournament and not for the regular season.
11 of the other 12 spots in the field were filled by our fellow CA schools (5 private, 4 UCs, and 2 CSUs.) With the final spot going to Fordham, who beat Pomona-Pitzer in the 15th-place game.
Final finishing order:
1. Stanford
2. UCLA
3. Cal
4. USC
5. Pacific
6. Long Beach State
7. UC Davis
8. UC Santa Barbara
9. UC Irvine
10. Pepperdine
11. UC San Diego
12. San José State
13. LMU
14. Santa Clara
15. Fordham
16. Pomona-Pitzer

True, but they are reliant on PG&E to transport a lot of that power from off-campus sources to campus. When those lines go down, Stanford goes down. This happened in a recent wildfire. I don't know how PG&E reflects Stanford on their outage reports. Is it one customer or many?

Got it. Thought Stanford had it's own infrastructure as I thought that was the cause of a multi-day outage over the summer.

Stanford wins!
A close game throughout. I thought the teams were evenly matched. UCLA played very well, mixing things up in the middle.
There was a large contingent of UCLA fans in the stands.
UCLA had 32 shots to Stanford's 23. It felt that UCLA got a lot of rebounds of their own shots.
There were very few major fouls called. Apparently (before I got there), Stanford earned a penalty shot early, but missed.
Stanford would tie it up after UCLA got a goal lead. UCLA led at 0-1, 1-2 (Q1), 2-3, 3-4 (Q2)
Then Stanford got a couple of goals early in the 2nd half to lead 5-4 and UCLA was tying it up. Stanford led 5-4, 6-5, 7-6, (7-7(Q3)) and finally 8-7.
It may have helped that Stanford was awarded the ball (vs a sprint) at the start of the 2nd half because UCLA didn't line up in time.
(UCLA won the sprints in Q1 and Q2; Stanford won in Q4)
Stanford scored on that possession and the next.
With about 3 1/2 minutes to play, an ordinary foul was called while Stanford had the ball. After committing the foul and hearing the whistle, the player's opponent dove under him and rose up into him. There were several (5?) seconds of contact, delaying Stanford from putting the ball into play. IMO, that should have earned an ejection. It did earn the ref a chorus of boos. The refs repaid Stanford by giving the Stanford coach a Yellow Card, and just 8 seconds later, calling just the 2nd ejection on Stanford (Stanford up 1, 3 minutes to go), and then another ejection with 1 minute to go. UCLA scored on their first power play (which was in Q3, after Stanford scored the 2 goals to go ahead). Fortunately, Stanford was able to keep UCLA from scoring on those last two power plays.
(UCLA was charged with 4 major fouls, resulting in the penalty shot (missed) and 3 power plays (resulting in 2 Stanford goals). Stanford failed to score on its final power play early in Q4.)
I believe this is the first I've seen these goals (posts? what do you call them, to avoid "goal" being interpreted as a score?) in person. My impression is that they have harder, sharper edges so shots deflect more sharply rather than being deflected into the net.
(Yeah, I wish the Live Stream showed or announced the teams, the score, and the time & quarter, each time a goal is scored. I guess it was fed from the P.A. announcer who doesn't realize the Live Stream needs the context.)
In the Cal-USC match, there were so few stoppages of play early on that I noticed a more frequent substitution during play. (Player leaves the play area and another player then enters.) But they had 23 power plays, compared to just 7 in the UCLA-Stanford game.
By the way, Cal beat USC 11-10 for 3rd place. It is going to be a tight season!
This weekend,
UCLA 13, USC 12
Stanford 12, Cal 11
Cal 11, USC 10
Stanford 8, UCLA 7

Nice to be the “kings of California” in at least one sport. Also nice that I didn’t raise the woofing gods with the title of the thread, though I did note that the going was about to get a lot tougher… and it did.
I believe we are now 13-0 with wins over the previous #1, 2, and 4 ranked teams, which is awesome. I don’t know how water polo rankings work, but usually that’s enough to get you up to the #1 ranking.
The ranking is important because only 3 out of Stanford, Cal, UCLA, and USC will make it to the tourney, so if we don’t win the MPSF, it is good to come ranked ahead of the others so we aren’t the odd team out.

Long way to go, and Cal is still the team to beat. Allegedly. Great tournament for Stanford and Flacks!
