Stanford Men’s Soccer -
M T - 10-30-2022
Isn't there a Men's Soccer thread? That sure seemed like a bogus call that gave UW a PK.
I thought the game was pretty even but this isn't my area of expertise.
(And for people not following closely, UW MSoccer is ranked #1 while Stanford is ranked #5)

I posted updates in the women’s soccer thread, because I didn’t want to start a new one.

As Gunn says, Stanford was the victim of some questionable calls. Washington's 5th year senior, a savvy player named Meeks, drew two free kicks (? trips, ? flops) -- one a penalty kick -- and both were converted. Washington's third goal was also a free kick following a inconsequential hand ball. Later, a similar hand ball involving a Washington player occurred in the penalty area and was ignored. Usually the correct decision, but not if the other is called. In scoring this way, and in their style of play, Washington is a lot like Stanford. Washington's coach, Jamie Wrights (who played at Stanford) seems to have decided to adopt a way of playing that he was at the wrong end of for many years at Washington. Adaptation by a coach -- imagine that.
Stanford's goal keeper is solid and a 5th year, so he'll remain the starter through thick and thin. But he's been very sketchy in defending crosses, as evident in two of the goals yesterday and on other chances, both against Washington and other teams.
Stanford was badly beaten in the the earlier game of the weekend (OSU on Thursday). Stanford got an early penalty kick to go up 1-0 and completely took the foot off the gas. 20 of OSU's 31 players are from other countries, and only one American gets any playing time. Most new this year, after they lost most of last year's team that was #1 for much of the year (and lost to eventual champion Clemson on PKs in the quarterfinals of NCAAs.) When they're on, they completely control the ball for long periods. Against Stanford, they looked unbeatable. But then they tied bottom-feeder Cal on Sunday. Stanford really didn't give their best against OSU on Thursday, so I'm going to not overweight that game.
Stanford is missing two starters, and I saw both on the sidelines with their arms in slings yesterday. There are two weeks left in the regular season and then maybe another week before the first game of the tournament. So perhaps one or both will make it back for at least part of the tournament, if Stanford advances.
As the color commentator, Christopher Sullivan, said yesterday, Stanford can compete with any team, which was evident yesterday. I think they were the slightly better team yesterday, and they again showed a lot of fortitude coming back from 3-2 down with only about 18 minutes left.

Wouldn't want to knock any of the "fire Shaw" threads off the first page.

With only one conference game left, Stanford trails UW by four points in the standings table. So we aren't going to catch them. But maybe we'll get another shot at the Huskies in the NCAA tournament.

I hope so. Washington is about the most unlikeable #1 team i have seen in years. I think they could play soccer but mostly don't. Instead its 1960's England boot ball. Case in point the UW free kick 70 yards from goal that they promptly launched into the Stanford box. Just ugly. Good news is the men outplayed them in the first game while losing 3-0. This time we managed the offense better but still have defensive issues to clean up. So improvement that i hope would carry into a game 3.
This is a really fun team to watch for Stanford. I hope it goes deep into the tournament. They may not have the stud forward to carry them through, but it will be interesting to watch.

The NCAA has announced the field and the bracket for the men's soccer championship. Stanford is the #5 overall seed. P12 opponents Washington and Oregon State are #2 and #8 seeds respectively. UCLA is also in the field. Kentucky is the overall #1 seed.
Stanford gets a bye in the 1st round. This Sunday they play (presumably as host) their 2nd round match against the winner of UNC vs. High Point. Also on their side of the bracket is #12 seed UNC Greensboro, #13 seed Indiana and #4 seed Virginia.

The last time Stanford was in the tournament (the 2020 season that some conferences played in the fall of 2020 and others in the spring of 2021, with the tournament held in late spring), North Carolina eliminated Stanford. So perhaps Stanford gets the opportunity to reverse the tables.
Washington could have their hands full in their first match, as they might meet Creighton, a team that really took it to Stanford in September (and likely would have won but for a stellar game by Stanford's goalie, Matt Frank). Also, Creighton just won the Big East Tournament, taking down perennial power Georgetown 3-0 in the final.
As has been discussed, because of the nature of soccer, the better team often does not advance, especially when the outcome is decided by penalty kicks. And the differences between teams across college soccer is razor thin. Stanford recently outplayed RPI #2 Washington, in my judgment, but RPI #80 Cal was the better team in the second half of the last game of the season.
Home field for the first game, and, if they win, second game, helps a lot.

No Stanford players was selected in the MLS draft today. Does this mean theres a possibility some seniors are going to be back for a 5th year? I imagine Hughes would have been drafted but since his name was never called I'm holding out hope he returns for another year on the farm.

Regarding the possible return of any seniors, there are some academic seniors who redshirted a year who are coming back, I believe, such as Carlo Agostinelli and Mark Fisher, but those who played four years are moving on, I believe.
Per the story about the senior day game against UW:
"Before the match, Stanford recognized its four seniors, Matt Frank, Keegan Tingey, Cam Cilley, and Keegan Hughes for their commitment and hard work to both their athletic goals and their academic pursuits during their careers on The Farm."

With all the movement of players in other sports as discussed on the board, I wonder if the soccer team will gain or lose any transfers. While I haven't put a great deal of effort into the matter, I've yet to find good sources for news about college soccer or Stanford in particular. I subscribed to Top Drawer Soccer for a time, but it was a major disappointment.
