WBB: Stanford 102 -- Vanguard 25 - 81alum - 11-01-2022

Preview:

Stanford takes on Vanguard Wednesday at 7 in an exhibition match.  It will be livestreamed. We will learn a few interesting things, such as who will Tara start?

Vanguard is certainly not a match for Stanford, so it will be best to think of this as a practice session in which we play against our own metrics.  Only one Vanguard player is 6' tall, so we will have gigantic physical advantages over them.

Vanguard is a religious college of 2500 in Orange County.  Their women's team was 13-12 last year and made the NAIA tournament.  Their coach, Russ Davis, has coached them for 27 years and won a NAIA national championship once, and gone to the NAIA tournament 24 times.  He is an NAIA Hall of Fame coach.  He also coaches the Cal Swish club team, so he may be known to some of our players.  That is, if I am not mistaken, Juju Watkins' club.

It is difficult to scout the team since I can't find stats easily available on their team site.  However, looking at individual player biographies tells us a few things.  Their 6'1" center (from Uganda) Melissa Akullu makes 56% of her shots and averages about 18ppg.  They also have several senior guards--all around 5'8"--who average  20+ mpg and all shoot treys in the 30+% range.

My hope is that their guards are crafty and aggressive (they are experienced) and give our youngsters a test.  I also hope that the fact that we scheduled a game with Juju Watkins' coach's college team is a good sign.  Reminds me a little of scheduling CSU Bakersfield where Erica McCall's father is coach.

Thank you for the preview!!! I know this is just an exhibition, but I cannot wait. This is the start of Stanford Women’s Basketball season!

I can’t make but give a big hand to Davis. He’s recovering from serious illness
For the Swish he coached the Samuelsons Pohlen and Harmon and so many players

Last night at the booster reception, Tara said that two people who have never started before will start, and both may be a bit nervous. She declined to say who they were, said instead, come to the game and find out. My guess is that it will be Kiki and Agnes.

I think you're right about the two new starters. That said, Brook has not started either and Talana has not started a college game -- and I think its just a matter of time before Talana works her way into the starting lineup, depending on her defense vs. the offense of Agnes.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Vanguard 7pm Wed (exh) - 2006alum - 11-02-2022

Based on what everyone has said, and what Tara's said, my guess is the starting lineup is:

Lepolo
Jump
Jones
Brink
Iriafen

Unless Jones will run point and we don't need an outside shooter in a wing type position, an Emma-Nopu starting lineup has to boot Jump, and that lineup is incredibly tall and pretty weak from outside. And it seems weird to think of a lineup with no guard shorter than 5'11 on the Court, though of course the post-Hones, Pohlen-as-PG days were that way as well.

From what Tara said, the fact that "2" have not started means the 3 probably have started.  And if she said "have not started before" I think implies "before for Stanford" and since that statement would assume that the people in question have been at Stanford, it must mean that no freshmen will start tonight.

Put that deconstruction of her sentences together and you get this lineup, I think:
1. Jones
2. Jump
3. Emma-Nnopu or Demetre
4. Brink
5. Iriafen

I really, really don't know whether it will be Emma-Nnopu or Demetre--that is a coin flip to me given my information, and I can invent reasons for why Tara would prefer either one over the other.  A lot of people are going to come in off the bench quickly, whoever starts.

I’m guessing it’s Emma-Nnopu because Tara really prioritizes defense (think Wilson and Lacie starting last year).  BUT, if Demetre has shown in practice that she’s a 40+% 3-point shooter then she has a shot.

Really, really bummed! We didn't think to get the digital ticket set up until a few minutes ago and when we went to do it, things weren't working. Have finally done it, but with traffic I can't get to the game in time to be there from the start. Ugh. If we just had paper tix, would have been no problem at all. At least there's a live stream, or I hope so!

A daughter of a relative went to Vanguard University for a nursing degree.  I was at the campus a while back.  Many students are commuters.  This should be a good experience for Vanguard's team.  It may also be an extreme mismatch.  In any event I'm excited to watch what new players have to show.  I'm a fan of Elena Bosgona but from board commentary it sounds like she may not get too much playing time.

Is there a reasonably efficient way to capture the live stream on a laptop or iPad for viewing at a later time?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Vanguard 7pm Wed (exh) - 81alum - 11-02-2022

During warmups, Kiki was draining treys.

I will try to capture and upload to YouTube. I can't give instructions for capturing with laptop or iPad, though.

Belibi not warming up.  Correction, she came out late and looks fine!

That’s very nice of you, CompSci87. Sadly, work is intervening tonight.

Betts showing reliable jumper from the elbow.

Jump's practice treys are going In.  Brink's are not so far.

She just hit two before the anthem break

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Vanguard 7pm Wed (exh) - Lorcan - 11-02-2022

It looks like starters are Agnes Emma-Nnopu, Haley Jones, Hannah Jump, Kiki Iriafen, and Cameron Brink!

So we did figure it out!

Iriafan Almost cannot miss in practice, from everywhere.  I hope this is more than a hot streak, because she looks like Superwoman out there.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Vanguard 7pm Wed (exh) - bl82 - 11-02-2022

First time I ever saw Kiki play I thought she was going to become Superwoman. As quick as she is and as incredible as her footwork is, I wonder how well the likes of Cam and Lauren can guard her. Iron sharpens iron! …but I never thought we see Superwoman this early in her career.
