It is pretty clearly obvious Elon Musk has no clue what he is doing with Twitter and will be running it into an iceberg. Given it has been a platform we use to share information from what we deem credible sources on this site, it's probably warranted to talk about its degradation here.
Nobody is paying $8/month for a blue check and nobody is going to really trust the blue check to mean anything as soon as this farcical plan is put in place. I've read some really bad things are going on inside the company and I feel for the workers who are being treated so poorly. Twitter has always had its warts, but at least when competent adults were in charge it TRIED to have some type of regulations to monitor behavior and content veracity.
Not a great idea to have someone with a social disorder (Asperger's) running a giant social media company.

Why don't you find a political message board to spew your political views. Cardboarders are capable of deciding for themselves what sources they deem credible.

Yeah because he's done such a crappy job running Tesla & SpaceX. I'd be waiting until more firm plans are put in place before judging him, but IDGAF what he does with Twitter. I deplatformed it a few years ago and I won't go back no matter who's in charge of that toxic cesspool.

I highly doubt that the (insert source of misinformation here) are going to start putting misinformation about recruits reports of offers and commitments. Thought it might be hilarious if someone tried.
I’m struggling to see the relevance of this thread. I’m open to divergent opinions, but it may be best to let this peacefully retreat from the front page.

How did I spew any political view? Should I dismiss Kate Starbird's concerns?

Your entire post clearly comes from your political leanings. And you can always cherry-pick one person who shares similar views.

How do HS prospects use Twitter?
I’m under the possibly wrong impression that your average HS prospect relies somewhat heavily on Twitter to communicate w/ppl (e.g. coaches) who can get them signed.

Hell, no! You are rightly indignant re her valid concerns. My take is the same as the advertisers who are cautiously monitoring the new regime. I will say, however, that the shareholders and lawyers who've been crawling all over this thing for months, pretty much vetted Musk. But it's now a private entity/property. Tweet-posters beware. Probably won't see any long-term ad contracts for a while. Musk will do what's in his--and only his--best interests.

I followed Stanford sports on Twitter (for near real-time video clips, news, in-progress scores) but just "deactivated" my account (which will result in it being deleted in something like a month). I hope some alternative will rise to the fore.

You’ll probably like Tribel.

Don’t forget Starlink, possibly his most important enterprise. Ask Ukraine, for example.

Starlink is part of SpaceX, but that is neither here nor there. Bezos was highly successful building Amazon; the Washington Post continues to struggle. Maybe Musk will be successful turning twitter around; maybe he’ll just piss away $40 billion, which again is neither here nor there. I still follow people on Twitter, including some Stanford accounts. As long as it is a useful and interesting, I will continue to use it. If Musk is as bad at running Twitter as some people seem to believe, then those people will disappear and be replaced by trolls and misinformation, then I will drop twitter. But as of today, I notice little difference from last Thursday so I’m still using it.

Thanks for clarifying Starlink. Pretty much agree with everything else.

This thread doesn't seem political to me. I don't see a problem with discussing the usefulness of Twitter or the changes Musk is making.

I wasn't. I thought Starlink was part of SpaceX. And I hope that Starlink soon becomes an important enterprise for Iran as well as Ukraine

Spew? That seems unnecessarily rude. Maybe take it down a notch.

I have no thoughts on whether this opinion piece is correct, but it's an interesting theory that Musk bought Twitter for ideological reasons, not economic ones, so in the short term Musk doesn't actually care whether it makes money:

No idea how successful Elon will be with Twitter. I do think the fact that he is a heavy user is very good thing. I also am pretty sure that the cost reductions will be good in the long run. My guess is Twitter is going to lose some left wing users but pick up some right wing.
I wouldn't be against him....

Of course it’s political. I mean I don’t care. But Musk is a lightning rod for a lot of reasons – some of them political. And his ideas relating to what can or cannot be posted on Twitter are certainly political. As is the response. And that’s coming from someone, by the way, who avoids social media like the plague.
Anything in this day and age relating to social media is political. Inherently.

Speculation among SV types is that Musk would like to turn Twitter into the US/Western equivalent of China's WeChat but hopefully without the heavy-handed government control. If that happens it will be very profitable for him and Twitters investor. Of course others are also trying ... (Can I assume that most folks here know the WeChat model?)
Twitter also has a reputation for paying well above market rate - Hopefully those impacted banked some of those Twitter dollars.
None of this is meant to excuse the absence of good WARN/Lay-Off practices but it's not surprising that a take-over would be followed by a restructuring for several reasons. Being let go will ALWAYS be personal to the person laid off (and I've been one of them in the past) but it would be shocking if ANY acquiring entity didn't restructure/refocus/reduce spend. This acquisition and today's moves will be best judged by what happens next and that may depend upon where the saved dollars are reallocated.
Twitter itself is flooded with Tweets from exiting employees and as it is a social media company any restructuring was going to provoke an immense media hit. No doubt today could have been navigated better but we shouldn't fool ourselves - it was always going to be ugly. Let's see what comes next before being blown this way and that by the day's wind.
