WBB: Stanford 86 -- San Diego State 48 - 81alum - 11-04-2022

Preview:

In a fit of bad scheduling, Stanford WBB misses the chance at a weekend matinee and instead officially opens the season on Monday night, the day before election day.  Our first opponent of the season is San Diego State.  This is a game that counts, and this will be a step up from competition against Vanguard--but no more than one step up.

San Diego State was a mediocre team last year, going 15-16.  The bulk of their points came from three upper class guards who each shot over 35% from three point range--two of whom are back this year.  So I expect that they will test our perimeter defense, which is what we need.

SDS has only 2 players who are 6' or taller: a freshman and sophomore.  As with Vanguard, we will physically dominate this team.  As far as I can tell, they have not played an exhibition game, so we are their first game.  Not a lot to scout.  Consider Vanguard but slightly taller, speedier, and more accurate.  Their coach is Stacie Terry-Hutson, in her 9th season with her high point being a 9-9 season in conference a couple of years ago.  Before San Diego State Terry-Hutson came off the Nikki-Caldwell coaching tree.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. San Diego State Monday 7pm - Lorcan - 11-04-2022

The bad scheduling isn't necessarily Stanford's fault. The NCAA mandated that the first day of the season was Monday - so in the interest of spacing out the schedule where possible, Stanford wanted to get started as early as possible - especially given that South Carolina comes to town.

Plus WVB is the Sunday matinee

I see.  That's too bad.  Our first home matinee will be South Carolina, meaning a lot of poor attendance before then.  Well I will be there on Monday, along with at least 30% of the season ticket holders and another hundred or two hundred people.

South Carolina will be respectably attended, but there was a time we would have sold it out.  Let's see how close we come this year.

I think there’s a decent chance South Carolina will be a sellout. Wilder posted last week how when he took over the Stanford WBB social media, we had 17K followers in 2019 and now have over 50k. Pretty impressive growth. Where is that same outreach for the marketing people or those responsible for growing the fans in the stands? That is just as important. Seems to be missing.

Let’s give Pohen some time ok? Her role is students. But vanguard is not a draw :)

I had no idea Pohlen was tasked with that job. Her title states she is the Director of Player Development. I was thinking more the athletic department as  a whole has fan engagement and marketing issues.  The right person for the job could turn things around and getting more students to attend the games seems like a good place to start. I hope she's successful if that is in fact part of her new role. Not enough effort is made to bring in new fans and just think how bad attendance would be if Stanford WBB wasn't successful. Yikes.

Please read Judy's great story on the FBC site awhile back.

Wow, here is an extremely odd stat.  The all-time series record with San Diego State is 4-4.  I bet all four losses were in the pre-Vanderveer era, although I don't know.

San Diego State supposedly has several talented guards, including transfers.  It will be interesting to see how well we defend them.  Our size and talent will give SDS too many problems on both ends of the court and eventually wear them down, but watch the perimeter play.

Yes, that is what I thought.  Last year they had three talented guards who each shot in the mid 30% range.  Two of them are back, plus the transfers.  Defending the perimeter will be important, and so we will get an early test of personnel and scheme to see how well we do.

So we had a non-conference home and away series with SDSU for three years in the middle of the conference season, and only twice since?  Last one looks like it might have been in the tourney.

Those games in the 80s were in our league, I think.  It appears there was a special league for women's athletics, something called the WCAA.  That seemed to include the California Pac-8 schools, and several of the southern California CSUs.  All just barely pre-Tara.  For one year the WCAA was replaced with something called the Pac-West--which was Tara's first year, and that is the year we stopped playing SDSU.  Then in 86-87 we started Pac-10 league play.  My guess is that the Pac-10 schools did not all have women's teams until then, or if they did they had limited travel budgets and were trying to stay in state.

The 2009 game was in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament, played in San Diego at San Diego State (we beat UC Santa Barbara in the 1st round there). Can't remember why we had to play the 1st and 2nd round away from Maples, but it clearly wasn't during brief period when the NCAA moved the games to away sites for those rounds because we were playing on San Diego State's home court. As I recall, Nneka had a fantastic game, and after that game, we got lost finding our car in the campus parking garage.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. San Diego State Monday 7pm - JTM - 11-06-2022

My wishes for this season:
1. The team stays healthy.  No season ending injuries.
2.  We learn to put teams away.  No more letting opponents back into the game so that it becomes competitive again.
3.  We find some new 3-point shooters.  Last year we made 259 shots. But we lost 127 (49%) to graduation/transfer.
4.  We have an effective backcourt.  One that can reliably break pressure and bring the ball up with enough clock left to run the offense.

Great list! I'd add, better free throw shooting

The student attendance has been growing over the last few years.  We lost our seats this year so they could accommodate more students behind the visitor basket.  It's a bummer we lost our great seats, but the reason we lost them is a good one.  I agree that the marketing of the WBB team is awful.  This is perennial national contender and the stands should be full much more often.
