A Final Welcome to the Home of the Utes! -

Hi all, Ute fan here with a few suggestions on things to do, places to eat and how to get around Salt Lake City if you haven’t been here before. For those of you that have been here, there are some new ways of getting around.
The new airport has opened since the last time you were here. If you’re flying Delta, you’ll be going into terminal A which means you’ll still have a bit of a walk to the main entrance. If you’re on any other airline, you’re going to terminal B. The direct tunnel to Terminal B isn’t finished yet so you’ll have quite a hike. If you need accommodations, such as a wheelchair or a cart, there are plenty. Getting to downtown from the airport is easy either by cab, rideshare or the Green Line light rail line is now open from terminal A to downtown. It’s easy to catch and takes about 15 minutes to arrive downtown.
No, Stanford will continue to visit, just the last one for us. We are moving from the area, and this will be out last regular tailgate at the Guardsman Lot. To continue a tradition that started in 2013, here are a few suggestions on things to do, places to eat and how to get around Salt Lake City if you haven’t been here before. For those of you that have been here, there are some new ways of getting around.

Don’t bother with airport hotels. They’re too far out of downtown to justify what you’ll save. Downtown has all of the basics, Hilton, Marriott, etc. Little America is always a solid place to stay. If you want to go a little higher end, the Grand America is the luxury place to stay, or the Monaco is an upscale European boutique style hotel. There are a few AirBNBs near the university as well.
To get to the game don’t think of driving. Catch a rideshare or better, use UTA’s Trax light rail line. Parking lots on campus are all reserved on gameday. Street parking in the neighborhoods is a hassle and a hike. Catch the Red Line University train at Courthouse station which is between 4th and 5th South or the 6th South station between 6th and 7th South. Either is walkable from most downtown hotels or just hop on a Draper or West Valley train to Courthouse station. On gameday, your game ticket is your UTA fare on Trax, FrontRunner heavy rail and all buses. It’s a great way to sightsee for free if you want.
Contrary to common belief, it really isn’t difficult to get a drink in Utah. Again, personal favorites are Gracie's or The Green Pig. Sadly, Lumpy’s, the former flagship bar of the Utes is gone and there really isn’t any bar that has taken over for it. If you're a dueling pianos kind of person Keys on Main is fun.
Restaurants run the range from taco carts to five-star dining at the Grand America. Some personal favorites are Bambara, The White Horse or if you like seafood, Current. If you like Mexican (especially moles), the Red Iguana or RI2 were raved on Triple-D. A little too far to walk if you’re staying downtown but grab the light rail green line to the Jackson/Euclid station. Either is close enough to walk. Lunch is a hands down. Tony Caputo's Market and Deli. Best deli in town period.
It's hard to say that there's anything that you'd consider "must-do" in Salt Lake City. Whether you're LDS or not Temple Square is an interesting tour. The state capital is a short (and free) bus ride up Capitol Hill. The Gateway is on the west side of downtown and the new City Creek Center on the east if you're into shopping. Also, If you have some extra time make a run to Park City. It’s about a half hour drive or you can ride the PC/SLC connect. The food in PC is good, the bars are fun particularly the No Name Saloon, and it won’t be as crowded as the season hasn’t really started.
I'm not sure what Stanford alumni is doing as far as a tailgate, but most alumni tailgates are held on the west side of Guardsman Way by the new football facility. Hopefully you'll have an opportunity to stop by the Guardsman tailgate lot directly east and have some pregame fun with us.
Most of the Ute fans you'll find posting here will be happy to make suggestions, offer any help or answer any questions you may have about your trip. Here's hoping it's a good one and above all a safe one however you travel to SLC! Feel free to send a message if you have any questions about your visit to Salt Lake City, tailgating or anything else.

I fixed the formatting issues, but it appears you have two copies of some of your text. Sorry about that.
Thanks, as always for visiting, and for the tips. I probably have a trip to Utah coming up, but not for this game. I'm hoping to enjoy some of your local skiing with my brother and son (and with any luck my dad too), probably around spiring break time.
If you don't mind me asking, where are you guys moving to?

Great write up thanks.
Apparently though, you've not seen the crowds we've been drawing to the games in Palo Alto. I wouldn't expect a brobdingnagian influx of Stanford fans heading to Utah, perhaps a couple of dozen family members might make the trip. . . .

Hope things have changed in Utah. Best restaurant fight I’ve never witnessed. Small town north of SLC. Black soundman, Nightly News cameraman, correspondent. Gigantic old man sitting near them, not happy about the soundman. Cowboy hat, roughout boots, size 18, really really big. Loud, racial invective, not happy. Gets up and advances to Jim who is not small. Cameraman looking for cover, correspondent gets up to talk and craps his pants. Jim very calmly rises and as the old man gets close picks up his chair and bashes it over the guys head. Goes down in a puddle. They scram, jump in the car and go Parnelli Jones.
To this day he is known as Chairman Jim.
Told to me by the cameraman, who with me tears later wears an Oklahoma Football t shirt to a secret location in the Philippines after being blindfolded and tossed into a blacked out vehicle with Diane Sawyer and our soundman and producer. On scene after setting up and waiting for hours under guard he comes over to me scared to death as there are multiple AKs in the room. “God, I hope he’s not a Nebraska fan.”

Shasta, thanks for dropping by the Cardboard all these years!
Utah was the one school I missed in my attempt to road-trip with my kid to every Pac-12 stadium. (Covid threw a wrench in our plans to attend the previous game.)
I'm saving your post in case we can complete our travels two years from now, assuming the Pac-12 is still around that is.
