WBB: Stanford vs U of Portland Game Thread - 81alum - 11-12-2022

Preview:

We complete a home-and-away with Portland, having defeated them at Maples last year 77-55.  Portland was a good team last year, as is clear from the not-so-blowout character of our win.  They went 20-11, lost in the finals of their league tournament, went to the NIT and lost to Oregon State in the second round.

So far this year Portland is off to a good start, having defeated Willamette and Hawaii in convincing fashion.

Maisie Burnham is averaging nearly 20 ppg.  Last year she scored 12 against us.  She is a 6' sophomore guard hitting 61% of her shots this year, including 4/5 from three point range.

Alex Fowler is averaging nearly 18 ppg, averaged 17 ppg a year ago.  Last year she scored 13 against us.  She is a 6'2" junior forward from Australia hitting 53% of her shots and also leading the team in assists.  Since she is their main inside presence, I imagine those assists mean she passes out from the paint to sharpshooters.

Liana Kaitu'u is averaging 13 ppg.  She is a 6' junior shooting 80%, all from inside.

I think that Portland is probably the best team we will have played so far, ranked 87 by Massey for what little that is worth at this stage of the season.  For comparison, Pacific is 131, Northridge 245, SDSU 169.

Portland has some size, starting with starters 6'6 COCHRANE and 6'2 FOWLER. Then off the bench,
they can also bring in 6'3 SEWELL and 6'7 CONDRON.  Incidentally, all of their post players
are Australian.  This should provide practice versus good size for Stanford's bigs.

My wife and I will be there (near the Stanford bench) to watch the game.  It is absolutely essential that Haley and Cam must find ways to dominate and impose their will on a very good team.  In 4 games, neither of our All-Americans has performed at an elite level that they have demonstrated in past seasons.  Part of it must rest on their shoulders, but a big part of it is they are in new positions (Haley a PG and Cam a 3), that they are not yet comfortable in and therefore not able (yet) to take advantage of their unique skill sets.

What would be wrong with this lineup?  Keeps Jones out of the pg role and keeps Brink a little closer to the basket.  Of course it requires that we play a freshman at PG.  South Carolina is using a redshirt freshman there....I bet Tara doesn't want to start a freshman in a high stakes game, but she could start Jones at pg and then move her over to a more natural position by inserting Lepolo later after the game calms down a little.
5. Iriafen / Betts / Belibi
4. Brink (stretch 4) / Prechtel
3. Jones / Demetre
2. Jump / Bosgana

RE: WBB: Stanford @ U of Portland Sunday 2pm - chimera - 11-12-2022

I don't believe that Brink is playing the 3.  Tara seems to be playing two bigs at a time, one at the 4 and one at the 5.  How many line-ups have we seen with three bigs together and one at the 3?  Almost zero.  Brink at the 3 was mentioned as something they try in practice sometimes.  She is in a different position in that she is more at the 4 than the 5, where she was last year.  That is to make room for Iriafen and soon for Betts.  I read a lot that people on here wanted to see more of Iriafen.  Well, yes or no?  More Irafen and Brink sometimes plays the 4 or less Irafen and Brink sticks to the 5?

I think Jones will end up playing pretty much liked last season with a bit more pg sprinkled in.  She will grab rebounds and go.  She will occasionally bring the ball up and start the offense.  She will also play the wing a lot when Lepolo or Nivar or Harriel run the point.  Last season she brought the ball up fairly often.  She definitely lead the break often.  She has not had a sea change in her role.  She has always been a creative passer.  She was our leading assist player last year wasn't she (I did not double check)?  I'd prefer her to play off the ball from the start of games but I do no think playing point guard a little should mess up her game.  She was 3-11 against Pacific I think, but I don't think she was taking shots she doesn't usually take or did not usually take last season.  Maybe she takes a few more threes.  But we want that, because it helps her game if she is a threat from three.  It is good for her and good for the team.  I'm not at all arguing that she should be our main point guard.  I don't want that.  I just no longer see it as a big negative if she plays there sometimes or plays there with certain match-ups.

To further support your point--the Princeton on offense and our constant switching on defense both scramble the positions on a regular basis.  If this is a "Warriors" style offense then everyone winds up playing everywhere once the flow of the game takes over.  There was a time when that would have been impossible, but Tara has recruited players who all can move and who most all can shoot from a variety of positions.  Jump can drive, Iriafen is a pretty good jump shooter, etc.  The simple structures (5-4-3-2-1, zone vs matchup vs. man, etc.) that we have become accustomed to may all be getting more fuzzy in modern basketball.

That said, Brink and Jones have not been playing all that well in their limited minutes.  I'm less concerned about Jones since, as I have said, she always always always rises to the occasion--or sinks to the occasion as it were.  Brink I am a little more troubled by.  It would be nice to see her have an outstanding game tomorrow to give her some encouragement and momentum.

I slightly disagree about Brink not playing well. Maybe on offense but her defense has been amazing.  By far the best on our team.  Yes a few silly fouls but her shot blocking both of the player she is guarding and as a help defender really messes with the heads of our opponents.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ U of Portland Sunday 2pm - BobK - 11-12-2022

In one game Brink had a double double. In the first half. That’s very good

RE: WBB: Stanford @ U of Portland Sunday 2pm - martyup - 11-12-2022

We are so deep.  We should be able to really harass opposing point guards by rotating our players at PG and asking them to pressure the ball from the backcourt on every possession.  With Agnes, Lepolo, Nivar, and Harriel we can keep fresh legs on their court for 40 minutes.  I think all of these players have shown they are capable of pressuring the ball and disrupting the opponents offense.  With Haley on the court, we should be fine getting the ball up the court with any of these players, although I think Lepolo has proven she can handle it on her own.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ U of Portland Sunday 2pm - Card10Fan - 11-12-2022

I strongly disagree with the critique of Brink through 3 games. She’s looked just fine to me. Less than 20 minute in 3 games. Hasn’t needed to score a lot. Needs to improve her FT shooting. Has been tremendous defensively.

Haley has been subpar. Only shooting 7/22 and 0-6 from deep. She needs to be a more dynamic scorer and take over and I think she can and will as the competition gets better.

Emma-Nnopu is not a point guard, so to play her without turning Jones into a PG means taking out Jump.  That would be the cost of playing a different point guard than Jones.

Another way of putting it:  Jones playing point guard makes it possible to have guard who is a defensive specialist.  Once one decides to put Jones in another position then you have to use Lepolo/Nivar/Harriel and that leaves no room for Emma-Nnopu.  Now, I am assuming she can't play point guard, but I admit that is an assumption.

Anna Wilson did not have this problem since she could be both a defensive specialist as well as playing point.

Brink said in a presser that she really looked forward to playing Portland because it was virtually her home town. Interesting to see if she shows up in a great game as a result. I'm rooting for her re this

I agree.  Having lived in Portland, OR myself from 1992-2007, University of Portland is THE primary D1 team
in the entire Metro Portland area, which includes Beaverton where BRINK grew up and where NIKE World HQs
is located.  Univ of Portland was a powerhouse in women's soccer from the mid-90s to the mid-2000s,
during which period they won 2 national championships (2202, 2005) and went to the Final Four 8 times.

Well, Agnes has been a starter so far this season and you don't have her anywhere on your proposed 3 deep depth chart.   I thought you might have merely overlooked her.

No, but the more I think about it the more I recognize Tara's dilemma.  I do think Emma-Nnopu is probably our best perimeter defender, but the only way to play her is to play Jones at point guard.  A lot of us are skeptical of using Jones at pg, but forget that moving her from that position creates other issues.  If Emma-Nnopu could play point guard the two could just swap.  I'm glad Tara gets to make these decisions rather than any of us ;)

Agnes will start vs South Carolina and will be tasked with guarding Zia COOKE.

Makes sense to me to put our best perimeter defender on their best perimeter threat.  But Emma-Nnopu has, up until now, been shadowing our opponents' point guards and slowing them as they bring the ball up the court.  That would be South Carolina sophomore Raven Johnson, who is coming back from a knee injury but was the #2 recruit after Azzi Fudd the prior year.  If we pull Emma-Nnopu off of Johnson to guard Cooke, who will be guarding Johnson as she brings the ball up?
