NIL doom and gloom for us -

Highly recommend latest Canzano article on effects of NIL deals on college football. It shows how far behind the curve Stanford and Cal are on the money given the athletes in football. We are not going to be able to recruit or retain our good players, and the trend is going to accelerate as the high school athletes coming out get more savvy. Shaw is a respectable coach, but views the game from the perspective of when he attended Stanford, in the early ‘90s. Sadly that world died with NIL and transfer portal. Both Bay Area schools are heading downward in competitiveness, declining fan interest- a death spiral.

Among Muir's many failures, this is among the most egregious. Not just for football but across the board

Yet WBB and WVB players have many NIL deals.

Guess that your coaches bought in Bobbbbbbbbbbbb. Good for you but hardly anybody nationwide cares about the Olympic sports until the Olympics and then they forget the next day. At least you are in a tiny minority of geniuses pledged to the 40 Year Decision. Enjoy while two of the three major sports crater.
A friend of mine who has worked in sports TV for decades told me this morning, "Shaw has a little perpetual grin all the time. Looks like my departed senile grandfather who could't remember where he put the TV remote.

Haley Jones reportedly has a million dollar deal. Brink's might be bigger.

Thanks for sharing the article. Doesn’t look that great for the Farm boys right now. Hopefully, some wealthy influential alumni are talking with the right people.

When NIL first became a player I think lots of folks, including me, saw it as the Wild West and that there would eventually...and sooner rather than later....be some rules to tone it down and make it reasonable. But I don't hear much of that anymore as the current MO seems to have become normalized. We....along with college football and basketball...are screwed.

If athletes want to monetize their image to sell shoes or be “influencers” on their social media platform, I’m ok with that. But I’m also glad that Muir has not jumped headfirst into establishing collectives that funnel money from rich donors to players in a thinly veiled pay for play scheme just so that the donors’ egos can be flattered by being associated with a winning football team.

Putting the genie back in the bottle is out of the question. The only way to go is forward, opening up the sports completely. Professional and legitimate agent money dwarfs NIL, and makes the playing field equal.

MBB + Football players have NIL deals from a collective, those numbers and info just aren't public yet. Let's just say they're doing just fine.

Were those deals facilitated through the university or by the players? Some of Stanford women's golf players probably have the biggest NIL deals. I'm guessing those deals were mostly done directly through the players. I know Rachel Heck has her own agency to negotiate NIL deals.
Did anyone read about the LSU female gymnast who has over $2million in NIL deals? Needless to say they were done because of her physical appearance. There were a number of national news articles about Tara's complaints these deals were done for the wrong reason.

You're talking about Olivia Dunne of LSU. Her $2+ million per year NIL money comes mainly from sponsorships and promo contracts (American Eagle jeans, for example) that she models on her social media pages. She's not showing any more than fans would see at a gymnastics meet. And why shouldn't she monetize her beauty, as long as she doesn't sacrifice her values or self-respect? It's not like there's lucrative pro gymnastics money waiting for her after graduation.
If anyone is going to take advantage of her physical appearance it should be her. She's just doing what models/actors/actresses have been doing for a long time, i.e. using their looks to their advantage. It shouldn't help her win a Rhodes Scholarship but I don't see any harm in her making some bank off it.

Rachel Heck and Rose Zhang both have several NIL deals. No idea what they are making but I'd guess at least six figures

Give me a break. Tara has worked for many years to improve the opportunities for female athletes based on their athletic talent. Tara clearly thinks it's a step back for all female athletes if the primary driver of NIL money is the amount of T&A that they show. Tara did not slam anyone for their deals or for making money off of their sex appeal. She was speaking from the larger perspective of what she thinks is best for all female athletes. Are we really going to join the fools from social media who are trying to turn her opinion into a false fight in women's athletics? Ridiculous.
Cheers,
Pete F.
