WBB: Stanford vs. CalPoly SLO Game Thread - 81alum - 11-14-2022

Preview:

I am always irritated by the "Cal Poly" designation since there are two of them:  SLO and Pomona, and people outside the CSU are pretty ignorant about this.  This Cal Poly opponent is SLO--the Mustangs.  Pomona is Div II.  SLO is Div I and their WBB team competes in the Big West, the same conference as CSUN, Hawaii, UC Davis, and CSU Bakersfield, to cite a few familiar opponents.  Next week they get to play South Carolina after South Carolina plays us, on Tuesday.  Quite a challenge for this team.

So far this year they lost to UCLA 48-84, and beat Simpson 81-49.  Don't ask me where Simpson is.  Massey has them at 265, so a whole lot less capable than U Portland at 99.  Last year they were 3-22, with 5 cancelled games.  One of their few victories was over CSUN.

This has a chance to be our least competitive game outside the exhibition.  The main goal should be to avoid injuries.  That said, I have tried to find out if there is anything in particular the fan should watch on this team, and yes there is!

Anika Shah is their starting point guard, a 5'3" spark plug.  She doesn't score a lot, but her claim to fame to us fans is that she was the starting point guard at Paly for three years and will undoubtedly bring a lot of fans.  Let's all give her a big cheer or two.

Another interesting player is 5'10" guard Nikola Kovacikola.  NK played for 2 years at Georgetown and then for 2 years at Penn before transferring as a grad student to SLO.  She started for many of those games, so she is a serious player, and must be fairly brainy to have played for an Ivy.  She is from Slovakia.

Sydney Bourland is a 5'10 sophomore guard who played for Mitty, so she must have overlapped with Jones for two years.  Expect to see some hugs with her former teammate.  She is their best scorer at not quite 10 ppg.

Their tallest starter is 6'1" Natalia Ackerman, a junior forward who scored 12 points against hapless Simpson.

Their fifth starter is Tailor Wu, a 5'7" guard from Hawaii.

Folks, this game is not going to be remotely competitive, but the kids on the Cal Poly team have a lot of local connections and we owe Cal Poly thanks for scheduling us and South Carolina.  Without their willingness to play South Carolina, we might not have had that game.  As the only source of drama in this is whether we hit 100 or whether they hit 40, we can afford to be a welcoming, friendly, appreciative crowd.  Magnanimous even.  I am going to break my normal rule and cheer (a little) for Anika Shah, a homie.  That is, if I can stay awake.

Thanks for the thorough intro to the D1 Cal Poly (As an undergrad, we played against the other Cal Poly.)
Simpson University is not in Springfield, but is in Redding.  Of interest, it is STARTING a football program.

There's three now, SLO, Pomona and Humboldt.

Also, there are a bunch of University of California campuses but really, only Berkeley goes by "Cal".

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. CalPoly Wed 8pm - 81alum - 11-15-2022

I just got an email saying that pre-game chalk talks would begin tomorrow for season ticket holders.  Plus the behind-the-bench gatherings have been scheduled. The first "behind the bench" will be after the South Carolina game.  It will either be a happy or a somber occasion.

Here is what it says:

Quote:We are excited to welcome back our loyal Season Ticket Members and invite you to join us in the return of pregame Chalk Talks! ....

In addition, stick around after the game for Behind the Bench to hear from Coach Tara VanDerveer and select players on the following dates, Nov. 20, Dec. 4 and 18, Jan. 22 and 29, and Feb. 20.

Glad they reinstated chalk talks before the conference season.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. CalPoly Wed 8pm - crackpot - 11-15-2022

So happy I won't know what to do with myself. Just need to remember it's 50 minutes before tip-off rather than 45. But I prefer that (except for those 6 pm games!).

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. CalPoly Wed 8pm - 81alum - 11-16-2022

My guess is that for a late Wednesday night game, with the word only getting out recently that the Chalk Talks are back, that there won't be a lot of people at the chalk talk and I might get to ask more than one question.  My guess is that most of the people there will want to ask questions about the players, which I find not very useful, since the coaches are always highly reluctant to say anything critical or specific.  Parents sometimes attend, for instance.

So here are some questions I might try.  Those of you who can't be there to ask your own questions, make some suggestions here and help me figure out what the most productive questions will be.  We can keep asking questions over multiple chalk talks until we get through the list.

1) Our defense this year seems different--there is a lot of switching and players rarely go over or under screens like Anna Wilson did so much.  Has the scheme changed?

2) Tara is famous for making creative moves on offense, for example moving on from the Triangle offense a few years ago and installing elements of the Princeton.  How is our offense continuing to evolve?  Is there something new this year that the fan should watch for?

3) What does Tara want to see in a point guard?  We fans have some memories of pure point guards in the past who could generate assists but not score, and we can also sense that we sometimes have shooting point guards who are kind of forced to be the floor generals out of necessity.  Where do Jones and Lepolo fit into that spectrum, and how do you see this position evolving over this year?

Thanks 81. What are the chances a current sr returns next season?

Good set of questions. Will be great to see others added to this. I'll be there, really looking forward to it. I'm wondering who will be the coach tonight? Steding and Anderson have never done these in person if I remember correctly. Kate has a lot of experience with chalk talks, but sometimes she's not all that communicative. My favorite was Tempe, she was great at chalk talks, seemed to enjoy being there and interacting with the fans, and was more open in her answers.

I’m not a season ticket holder so won’t be there but would love to know from a coach how NIL has affected recruiting.  Are some players more interested in padding their own stats and being a star vs playing in a team-first unselfish system like Stanford has?

I emailed Jeanette Pohlen last week asking about new strategies and events to increase fan engagement going forward and she replied with a nice response. I mentioned chalk talks and behind the bench. She also attributed Covid to many of the cutbacks/changes the last few years and noted how its affected the fan base. I feel like this quick change might be a result of my email! If people have suggestions to grow the fan base or other events, I recommend emailing Jeanette!

Doesn’t look like too many tickets left for Sundays game; we might get to a sellout still!

The chalk talk event is publicized to season ticket holders, but everyone is allowed in, so you should feel free to come if you're coming to a game.

Great idea to work through a list of collective questions!  We are unable to attend since we are out of state now, but is someone who is able to attend willing to summarize the key points?

I'm hoping for great attendance, but that there aren't many tickets left is no guarantee. Too many season ticket holders don't come to all the games. Maybe they will to this one, but I expect, sadly, to see some of the best seats in the house, which are unavailable to buy because they belong to season ticket holders, empty. Let's do what we can to fill them up. If you have more seats than you occupy yourself (e.g., we have four so we can bring friends to games), make sure they are ALL filled -- bring friends or sell the tix on stubhub or donate to Stanford, etc. There are ways to get these otherwise unused seats/tickets available. Let's do it.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. CalPoly Wed 8pm - M T - 11-16-2022

Another question:  High-ranking matchups are great for preparation for the season and the tournament, not just for Stanford but also for other PAC-12 teams.  But cross-country trips are expensive (whether Stanford is traveling or hosting).  How does the PAC-12 help in providing multiple opponents for a school such as South Carolina coming to the West Coast, or in other ways?

Do they still have redcoats?  Is there a policy to allow people to come down into available seats at halftime?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. CalPoly Wed 8pm - BobK - 11-16-2022

Living 2 1/2 hours away makes it hard to get to midweek games.
Yes redcoats they are ushers

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. CalPoly Wed 8pm - WBB fan - 11-16-2022

At the chalk talk. So great to have it again. Good turnout here  for Katie Steding.
