3-7 vs 3-7 -
gailtate - 11-16-2022
From today's SFChron.
Stanford enters Saturday’s 125th Big Game with a 3-7 record and a three-game losing streak, and it has failed to score more than 16 points in any of its past five games.
Cal, which hosts Saturday’s game, also has a 3-7 record and a six-game losing streak, and it failed to score an offensive touchdown in last Saturday’s 38-10 loss at Oregon State.
Not exactly classic resumes for a milestone matchup.
On Sunday, Justin Wilcox fired offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and offensive line coach Angus McClure, each of whom was in his third year working for the Bears. In his Zoom news conference Tuesday, Wilcox addressed the departures of Musgrave and McClure.
“A lot of times, people in this situation say it’s not personal, but it feels that way,” Wilcox said. “I have great amount of respect — as do all of our players and coaches — for Angus and Bill. They’re good people and good coaches.
“It is very, very difficult but at the end of the day, my job is to make those decisions void of any emotion or relationship, and that’s what I did.”
Wilcox said the game planning and play calling for the Big Game will be “a collaborative effort in every way.” Wilcox mentioned tight ends coach Geep Chryst — who has three years of NFL experience as an offensive coordinator, including with the 2015 49ers — running backs coach Aristotle Thompson, wide receivers coach Burl Toler III and consultant/former offensive line coach Steve Greatwood as being part of that collaboration.
In his Zoom news conference, Stanford head coach David Shaw said the Bears’ coaching changes do cause some uncertainty for the Cardinal, and believes those changes might alter his defense’s approach this week.
“You have to focus on yourselves,” Shaw said. “You have to focus on your rules and your calls and making sure that you’re sound against whatever you see.”
Cal is assured of a third straight losing season. Stanford will have consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 2008.
Injuries have plagued the Cardinal, but they only partially explain how Stanford has been outscored 132-34 over the past three games.
Shaw owns a 96-52 career record in 12 seasons as Stanford’s head coach. A reporter on the Zoom suggested that Shaw is on the hot seat, and the reporter asked Shaw, “Does that affect you or the team, and do you still feel confident that you’re the right person for the job at Stanford?”
Responded Shaw: “So as I said, our focus is on the 125th Big Game, and that’s what our focus is. Thanks.”

This game starts at 11:30 PM Central European Time. I don't think I will be staying up to watch it.
To illustrate what I, as a Cardinal fan, am willing to do under the right circumstances, I did stay up until 04:00 AM to watch our demolition of Iowa in the 2016 Rose Bowl. Best night's sleep I ever missed. Sadly, there is less and less about this program that makes missing valuable hours of sleep worth it. Still, Go Cardinal! Get the Axe back! Zzzzzzzzzzz.
As for Shaw and the hot seat, I fear we will be having this conversation again at the end of the 2023 season. Any questions from the press on this subject will be professionally dismissed. 2-10 anyone?

I don’t remember the year, but it was at Cal. (EDIT - ‘88.) Before the game, I predicted a tie, cause neither team was good enough to win. My exact prediction was it will be tied coming down to last play. One of the teams will have a shot to win by kicking FG. It will be blocked, picked up and run back for a TD. But the run back will be nullified by a penalty and the game will end tied.
I came close. Tuan Van Le blocked Cal’s FG attempt. No run back. Ended in a tie.
This year someone has to win. Or, better put, someone has to not lose. I’m guessing Cal is the not loser. 28-12 Cal runs for 250 yards. Stanford 32. Karty kicks 4 FG’s, going 4-4 to finish his perfect season. He becomes first place kicker to win Stanfords MVP award.

The Bottom 10 has "both sides of the Big Game" on the waiting list this week.
Fans of both teams should come to CMS with bags on their heads. So should the Athletic Directors.

Chronicle’s Connor Ledterman wrote about Shaw and hot seat in todays green. First time I’ve seen a Bay Area sports page devote space. Went down the litany of horrors then the litany of reasons/excuses. Concludes that he will be back.

I think 3-9 would continue the discussion. 4-8 or even 5-7, he's definitely coming back. To be honest, I think that puts a lot of us fans in an uncomfortable position. I hate to get philosophical here but WTH is the Greater Good?

Connor Letourneau's piece was the fairest--and most devastating--take any Stanford coach I've ever seen. He also called Shaw out, not that it makes any difference, in the latter's dismissively smug attitude in the media conference. How this guy, this multimillionaire, who professes to love his team, can tromp down the trail like a stubborn mule is beyond comprehension. Great Ambassador, indeed. Team deserves far, far more.
