With Tennessee getting slaughtered it looks more and more likely that SC or LSU will be up for the 4th slot. Heck they might both get in. I can’t hope for SC. But Brian Kelly is detestable. It’s been a lousy college football season.
SC is going to be a perennial power again. I can’t think of a University that benefits more from the portal/NIL combo. Makes me want to puke.

That was also my thinking. From 2009 to 2018 (almost a decade), Stanford (and Oregon) had the edge over the Trojans; and USC's years of domination of the Pac-XX appeared to be over. But time marches on. They finally appear to have a coach, and the portal/NIL play to their advantage. Watching the USC-UCLA game brought back memories of earlier times when those two teams battled it out at the end of the season for a berth in the Rose Bowl. Stanford is not even in the same universe in 2022.
LSU would have to beat Georgia to make the CFP. In my view, that's not going to happen.

SC very well could become ground-road-kill once they get into the Big 10 where they will be faced with playing a string of conference games that are against teams that are really physical. I can see SC loading up again with free agents next year, and when their QB takes off for the nfl so does their head coach. To a lesser degree SC has been a stepping stone to the pros for head coaches just like Stanford.

In fact, USC has been a perennial power since my father was following the exploits of Howard Jones's teams in the 1920s. It had some relatively mild struggles in the 1990s and more recently for a few years in the wake of the exit of Pope of L.A. (Pete Carroll) but those were speed bumps that Trojan Nation promptly smoothed out. Today, order is restored. And I fume with envy.

When my father was coaching at Washington circa 1950 Kal was the big power. They went to three straight Rose Bowls (1948-1950). Interestingly enough, it was a tie with Stanford in the 1950 Big Game that was the only blemish on their record during the regular season. Had Stanford won, Washington would have gone to the Rose Bowl.

Yeah. You have been a fan long enough to remember Ayala, Limehalu. McKay taking shots (“The PAC 8 is not very good this year, Stanfords in the Rose Bowl”. “I wanted to beat them by 1000 points”).one of the joys of the “run” was beating SC on a regular basis. Those days are gone.

I don’t like both teams. The Domers are entitled. The Trojans are back to being bullies.
But my favorite actor is John Wayne and my dad told me he was great to work with.
Hope SC wins and loses the conference championship.

USC has always done better when it was a pro team. The more professional the environment, the better their chances. In the old days, they had to cheat, now they can do it over the table instead of under the table. The NIL and transfer portal work almost comically in their favor.

I wonder how fond Wayne was of USC. He had done well at Glendale high school, like Reagan was student body president and Wayne originally applied to the Naval Academy but Navy turned him down. USC gave him one of seven allotted scholarships of $280, plus one meal per day if he was on the regular squad -- during the week, on the weekends he was on his own. He dislocated his shoulder surfing three weeks before his junior year football practice started (surfing wasn't allowed at Balboa Bay at that time of day because the waves were so rough), and Howard Jones both demoted him to the bench and Wayne lost his scholarship and owed his fraternity so much money that he was forced to drop out of USC.

Nice story. I was unaware of Wayne's history with the USC program.

His teammate Ward Bond brought Morrison along to work as a grip on John Ford pictures. And thus was John Wayne born.
Effective programs pull scholies.

Actually it was 2,000 points. Excerpt from a Wikipedia entry titled "Stanford - USC Football Rivalry" (unfortunately now a relic of the past):
In 1972, USC coach John McKay accused Stanford and its fans of having "no class" and said he'd "like to beat Stanford by 2,000 points"; Stanford coach Jack Christiansen responded that he wouldn't "get into a urinating contest with a skunk".[4][5] Two years earlier, when McKay's son J.K. and his high school teammate Pat Haden had told him they were considering going to Stanford, he replied, "If it was between Stanford and Red China, I would pay your way to Peking."

I asked my oldest son if he wanted to apply to USC. He said "I'd rather go to a junior college." I asked my younger son to tour USC when we were on a trip in SoCal. After 11 minutes on the campus he said, "I'm not going here" and turned on his heel and headed back to the car.

After U$C beat Stanford in 1972, a Stanford DB supposedly told a reporter "SC ain't shit. And you can print that." This got back to McKay in the locker room, prompting his rant. After the season was over, Christiansen tried to mend a few fences by having McKay up for a round of golf at Stanford. Not sure how much good it did.

Depends. Did Christiansen let him win? ;)

John McKay was a lot less funny when he was losing at Tampa Bay.

His best line there was when asked about his team's execution after a particularly bad game he replied "I'd be in favor of it."
