Crappy Stanford sports weekend - BostonCard - 11-20-2022

Let’s see:
Football loses to Cal
Women’s basketball loses to South Carolina in OT
Cross country disappoints in the NCAA championships
Water polo loses to USC in the final of the MPSF
Women’s soccer knocked out early from the college cup

Volleyball thankfully won
Men’s soccer playing now (and up 1-0)

Make that 3-0 Stanford

It's hell being an overachiever.

One more positive note: MBB won earlier in the week. Yes, it was against Cal Poly, but Phogge will be pissed if we dismiss a state school. And we did play well. It could have been a close game, but it wasn't.

Half empty or half full?

We take the acclaimed #1 Women’s basketball team to overtime.  We have a sell-out for the first time in 8 years.
We have an individual winner in MCC.  Top 5 finish for MCC & top 15 for WCC
The MWP team was ranked #4 in the country and beat #1 yesterday, but fell to #3.
WSOC was in the NCAA tourney.
WVB looks to be in good position to host a regional.  A Nobel Laureate was the honorary coach on Saturday.
MSOC continues in the NCAA tourney.
M&W Sw&D had good meets, qualifying a number of swimmers for nationals. The women had particularly good results.
#11 Squash barely lost to #9 4-5.

I consider it a bad week, especially losing WSocc and WBB games at home while losing big game after having a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter.

It was an absolutely dreadful weekend. No sugar coating or participation trophies necessary.

Only 5 schools other than Stanford advanced as far in the NCAA tournaments as Stanford in both WSOC & MSOC.
None of those 5 were ranked in the top 25 in the AP poll for women's basketball. (Stanford WVB #2)
None of those 5 were among the 31 teams listed in the MCC or WCC championships. (Stanford MCC #4, WCC #13)
Only one of those 5 was ranked in MWP, but it didn't get to the championship round of the MPSF.
As for Swim&Diving, it is midseason so we can only use rankings.  Stanford WSwim #2, MSwim #9.  Of the 5 schools, 2 are ranked #21 and #23 in WSwim, none in MSwim.
In WVB, Stanford has #3 RPI.  One of those schools is ranked #4. None of the others are in the top 50.
None of those 5 appear to even have a squash team.

Bad weeks at Stanford would be great weeks at any other school.  Their seasons, if they even have one, typically end earlier.
I'm not aware of any easy way to calculate the winning percentage across all sporting events, but I'm sure Stanford would easily have the highest percentage and by far the most wins.

In the same vein, I'll mention that I noticed USC WVB is giving out long-sleeve T-shirts to "the first 2000 fans" at the final WVB home game of the season.  (Their largest crowd of the year has been less than 1800 (vs Stanford) and the smallest was 117.  They are averaging  1003 per game.  Stanford is averaging 2745.)

Bummer that Stanford, who beat Cal two of the three times they played this season, is done for the year. I'm thinking the loss to Princeton killed us in the discussion for the NCAAs. Alas, the Spanish Bears continue on.
