WBB: Stanford 82 -- Santa Clara 69 - 81alum - 11-29-2022

Preview:

Stanford returns from Hawaii to take on Santa Clara after a short turnaround.  We are past the point of calling this a "warm up" for Sunday's matchup against Gonzaga at Maples.

Santa Clara is 5-3 so far this year, and is coming off a 71-58 win over Washington, so it has already shown itself capable of knocking off a Pac-12 team.  Massey ranks them 129, which is on par with San Diego State and Portland--but they just jumped 79 slots with the win over Washington and another over #79 South Dakota.  Basically, they seem more dangerous than most of the weaker teams we have steamrollered and are just getting their stride.

So far this year Santa Clara has been led by a 5'10" freshman guard from Australia, Tess Heal, at about 17ppg.  She shoots treys at 35% but that does not seem to be her main scoring preference.  That would be the specialty of 5'5" senior guard Ayzhiana Basallo, a transfer from Arizona State, who is shooting 42% of her treys.  Their third guard is Ashley Hiraki, a junior who played for Mitty, so she must have been a teammate of Jones.

Santa Clara also starts both a 6'3" forward and a 6'0" forward/guard from Australia, so they have some height.  With strong international talent and the transfer from ASU, they resemble the bottom half of the Pac 12 more than a mid-major team.

Thanks for the analysis, great info. But one correction -- the "warm-up" would be for the Sunday game against Gonzaga, not Tennessee. The Tennessee game is Dec 18.

Thank you for the correction, which has now been made!

Four schools in four years!  That must wreak havoc on meeting degree requirements--I doubt it is possible for anyone to graduate in 4 years spending a year each at 4 institutions.

Something is deeply wrong with the transfer rules.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Santa Clara Wed 7pm - Softball Fan - 11-29-2022

There are problems with the transfer rules. However, no one is forcing athletes to transfer.  There are some student athletes who put graduating below playing college sports on their priority list.

It looks like Stanford hasn't played Santa Clara since 2015 if I'm reading gostanford.com history correctly.

Can anyone help me understand how she can transfer 3 times without sitting out a year even once? Thanks!

She sat out 20-21

I've been sick so will have to stay home and watch the game on the livestream. Bummer.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Santa Clara Wed 7pm - WBB fan - 11-30-2022

We do have one common opponent this season -- both Stanford and Santa Clara have played CSUN. We won 104-40; they won 66-62. But we should get too overconfident -- stopping Heal is going to be a good challenge. She's 5' 10", so could put Telana on her, or ???

Get well soon, and thank you for protecting others. I hope we'll see you at a game soon.
(BC, take care, since you saw him a few days back.)

Fans don't, but I bet Stanford coaches do.  Never take anyone lightly.

An infamous game, and if you need to know more, remember that JR Payne who coached Santa Clara that year brought her brutalist philosophy to Colorado, so it is a recurring bad dream.  Win or lose, I always feel fortunate to come out of a Payne game with no injuries.

Santa Clara today, however, is coached by Bill Carr, a former USF basketball player.  He has coached Santa Clara for 7 years since Payne left--but I know nothing about his basketball philosophy.  Let's hope it is a good clean war of movement and not a Payne-inspired quicksand pit.

That 2015 SCU team went 23-9 and lost in the first round of the WNIT to Fresno State. They averaged 21 fouls per game, this year's version averages 14 fouls per game. I don't think it will be a slugfest, and I think SCU will lose by about 25.

Where are Game Notes this year?  Used to find them on the schedule page along with the other items (e.g. watch, listen, etc.) for the next game.

For this game, you get a little at
  https://gostanford.com/gameday/womens-basketball-vs-santa-clara/wbball/4583/
found under "Story Preview" on https://gostanford.com/gameday/womens-basketball-vs-santa-clara/wbball/4583/
but under "Read" is the game notes pdf for the South Carolina game.
(I tried the obvious links for the Santa Clara game notes pdf based on the url for the SoCar game notes but didn't find it.)

Maybe someone was out sick with writer's cramp from so many games in so few days. ;-)

Sigh: Once again, the Stanford Athletic Department (GoStanford.com) ignores the Stanford radio station, KZSU.Stanford.edu when it indicates coverage of the game.

It's almost time for some beautiful basketball.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Santa Clara Wed 7pm - CompSci87 - 11-30-2022

We give up a ton of open 3 pointers and lead only 20-19 after one quarter. Ugh.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Santa Clara Wed 7pm - martyup - 11-30-2022

Well, that was less than impressive.  We lead by 1 point at the end of 1, 20-19. We gave up three 3 pointers and only made 1 ourselves. SC is shooting better than us at this point.
