World Cup Soccer Thread - cardcrimson - 11-29-2022

With all the discussion about MTL, coaches, and the band, who knew?

US up 1-0 early in the second half.

RE: Isn't there a soccer game on now? - TonyLima - 11-29-2022

Iranians flopping every single time a US player gets within a meter.

RE: Isn't there a soccer game on now? - Leftcoast - 11-29-2022

Nice win with some drama in the final minutes.  Netherlands next.

Any opinions on the late first half US goal called back due to an offsides call?  Glad it didn't impact the eventual outcome.

Let me see if I can grab the clip.

Oops. Game wasn’t recorded. Will try to grab the play during replay. Check back in 2 houes or so.

Oops #2 15:45 left coast time. Having trouble importing the clip. May just post it raw and give a link to anyone who asks. Discretion appreciated. Will be a password protected zip file.

It was (barely) offside. Correct call.

Was an Edge player offsides or perhaps a cornerback?

At the time of this frame, it doesn't look like he was offsides, though I think the semi-automated video review seemed to show him behind the defender.

a great victory, and a great goal by Pulisic, taking an injury in the process.

I give us a decent chance against the Netherlands if Pulisic is fully recovered. If not, we are going to have problems scoring. He is our only player with superior one-on-one skills.
Netherlands is reputationwise a powerhouse but this year’s team is good, not great.

It looked to me as if the Iranian goalie deliberately drove the heel of his foot into Pulicic.  I haven't yet found a replay which shows the full play.

Thanks for the input on the offsides call.

It's hard to get to upset on a call made in real-time and decided by mili-seconds and fractions of an inch.   On to the Netherlands and three days of fretting over Christian Pulisics abdominal strain. (Taken to the hospital post game for an MRI, I hear).

Offside is after 51:00 of the stadium clock, around 2:00 of the clip. Thanks for saving me from dealing with this recalcirant tweet. Gonna go review another winery instead! If anyone’s interested, Here’s a link to the master page for the event I’m reviewing.

To my trained soccer eye, I didn't see the offside. I believe it should have been a goal.

US has a good shot at beating the Dutch. They have had very good teams in the past, but they are average this year. They have been unimpressive so far.

Just gotta watch out for their trained divers in the penalty box. They eliminated Mexico 8 years ago on a dubious penalty call (no era penal!). Fortunately, their Greg Louganis in cleats is no longer on the team.

Absolutely not. I have a recording of the game and replayed the goal several times. Pulisic's momentum carried him into the goalie as the latter sprawled across the goal trying to make the save. The injury was caused by the goalie's left knee hitting Pulisic in the abdomen when Pulisic ran into him in a T-bone collision.
For all the politically related build-up leading up to the game, there weren't that many rough or malicious fouls during the game -- if you want to see those, watch how Serbia defended against Brazil's Neymar. Yes, there was a lot of shirt grabbing (both ways) and the Iranians dove a lot trying to draw fouls, I didn't think it was that violent a game.

Yeah, I was struck less by the level of physicality than the politesse between players from opposing teams. After spills or tackles, they seemed unusually willing to check on each other, pick each other up etc.

RE: Isn't there a soccer game on now? - newguy - 11-29-2022

the injury to Pulisic is now being described as a pelvic injury.  and he was in extreme pain.

I was very struck by this too. It was unusual, especially for a final game in a WC group match with both teams advancement on the line.

I think it probably has to do with the Iranians' quiet dissent against the regime, notably not singing the anthem, before their families were threatened and they sang today.
