Bonus show posted this morning with Pac-12 Hotline's Jon Wilner, who shares his thoughts on the state of the Stanford Football program and previews potential candidates. Oh, and why does he think Stanford should call Jim Harbaugh?
Thank you for listening!

Getting Harbaugh's thoughts is a no-brainer essential at this moment. Why would anybody want to ignore him???

I didn’t say ignore him if he wants to offer advice. But I would rather call John Lynch, who is more closely aligned to the program than someone who left so long ago and isn’t an alum. I will shut up now. Sorry I said anything in the first place.

Thanks for this Troy. I think you were spot on with "what's next" being more important than "who's next" and Muir is months behind already. He should have had a plan at least six months ago for both NIL & portal.
I don't see an issue with calling Harbs for advice, but I wonder if he'd actually give it and wouldn't count on it. Might depend on who calls him - I'd like to think the best shot is one of his former players. Muir didn't hire him and wasn't around during his tenure. He and Shaw clearly don't get along very well. Don't know what kind of relationship he had with Condi but she might be another option.
I wish Muir would be more transparent with who's advising him and who's on the search committee. While I understand a desire for secrecy, I think it's a missed opportunity to showcase the Stanford family to prospective coaches. The list could be quite impressive

I agree that Muir should be more transparent with the hiring process and include non-Stanford employees as part of the process. Todd Husak Andrew Luck and Doug Baldwin are a few that come to mind. I have no confidence that Muir will get this right especially if his interview committee consists of AD functionaries.

Muir has been in his job for over 10 years and has not been transparent about much of anything. This process will likely be as opaque as everything else the department has done during his time as AD. The next time we hear from him will probably be the press conference to introduce the new HC.

Totally agree. I think there are lots of good reasons to be skeptical of Muir's efforts, and I don't have a ton of faith that he will be successful. On the other hand, I would not assume that just because we haven't talked about a lot of stuff openly that it isn't or hasn't been happening, or that the barrier has been lack of planning or effort by Muir. Others have pointed out that MBB has a collective, and there has been some movement with regards to the portal. But this isn't something that Muir can decide for himself, or that he can propose and get rubber stamped by the administration and academic senate.
Lastly, we do have to ask ourselves, collectively, if winning is worth it. This is probably the wrong forum to ask the question, but it is a question the University and community have to wrestle with, and do so intentionally, rather than falling into it in order to keep up with others.

I agree 100% but I'm just saying that I think this is a missed opportunity. At Shaw's final presser he said the pitch was "Stanford" - well here's a great opportunity to improve that pitch that he's missing out on.
