Let's set up our NIL collective on this board -

I'm tired of the punditry bemoaning our head coach opening as tough or undesirable because we aren't in the NIL game and don't have a fan collective. (Hell, even
Kal has one.) Let's set one up and gin up some attention for it. Call it Palm Drive Collective. $1k minimum buy-in yearly to support athlete appearances, events, and other NIL-linked activities. Who's with me?

Can you explain in detail how it works?

Here's how it works: since schools can't buy recruits directly without violating NCAA rules, boosters buy them indirectly. ;)
I'll be really interested to see how long this arms race lasts. If I were a Miami or A&M booster, I'd be asking some serious questions about what my money got me.

Who decides which players get what money? Is it like a mutual fund where the fund manager makes the investment decisions? How does the collective interact with the football coaching staff. Does the head coach get to approve the "investments?"

Schools can't have any direct involvement, other than to facilitate communications/introductions between players and boosters/collectives and to help student-athletes in developing NIL opportunities. Structure varies from school to school and team to team. Here's a great primer from On3:

No offense toward anyone on this board, but I'm not giving a dime to support any NIL collective as long as Bernie's in the house.

That's fair, but the money doesn't go to him or the department, it goes to the athletes.

Perfect guy to run it: Sam Bankman-Fried. Stanford ties, experience with secretive financial dealings and cutting edge financial instruments, soon to be available.

Thanks for the link. It seems that NCAA rules are being openly violated.
Quote:Here is what the NCAA laid out:
Recruiting conversations between a collective that has triggered booster status and a recruit are not permissible.
A collective that has triggered booster status may not communicate with a recruit, a recruit’s family or others affiliated with the recruit for a recruiting purpose or to encourage the recruit’s enrollment at a particular institution.
A NIL agreement between a recruit and a collective may not be guaranteed or contingent on enrollment at a particular institution.
Coaches and staff may not organize, facilitate or arrange a meeting between a collective and a recruit. This includes providing a collective with a recruiting list or watch list, including the NCAA Transfer Portal. Coaches are also prohibited from communicating directly with recruits on behalf of collectives.

The NCAA prohibition on school communicating or working with third party collectives is akin to how Political Action Committees are not suppose to have any contact with or coordinate with the elected office candidates they are created to support. Laughable in both cases.

Yes, and schools are not supposed to contact players who are not in the portal, which is also consistently being violated.
I think the NCAA worries that if it were to start enforcing its rules it would wind up in court and become even more defanged.

Yes and I understand that. Bernie needs to go
