Very nice to see that! Smith was one of my favorites, and she had a lot of pressure adjusting to life in Stanford and the US when she first showed up on campus. It is clear that she has acquired a lot of emotional stamina to be gallivanting around the world and earning top honors in Poland. What a great success story.

Alanna's last game: 25 minutes, 35pts, 17rbs. only 2 blocks however. Her team is in 1st place by 3 games

I love Stanford players whose play communicates the joy, passion, and fun of competitive sports. She was certainly one of these - as was Candice Wiggins, Andrew Luck, Caterina Macario, and, at his best, Richard Sherman. Best wishes to Alanna in Poland and thank you for sharing.

Alana was like Adam Keefe.
When she got the ball at the basket she would score.
Period.

Haley Jones is a good contemporary addition to that list. Perhaps Jennifer Azzi for an "OG" addition of players who play with infectious joy?

And Kendall Kip?

I knew I needed more "plays with joy" callouts from Stanford's WVB teams.
Kendall Kipp is a good call - She looks like she's having fun on the court. Under Covid I didn't attend as many volleyball games in person so I didn't see her play as much as players from previous years.

Australian Forward Alanna Smith (193-F-1996) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for top-ranked Gorzow Wlkp., receiving a Hoops Agents Player of the Week award for round 18.
The 26-year old player had a double-double of 42 points and 14 rebounds (in 30 minutes), while her team outclassed Pruszkow (#10, 2-16) with 37-point margin 94-57. It allowed Gorzow Wlkp. to consolidate first place in the Polish EBLK. Gorzow Wlkp. has a very good season and are considered to have a run for the championship title. They improved their record to 16-1. In the team's last game Smith had a remarkable 68.8% from 2-point range. She turned to be Gorzow Wlkp.'s top player in her first season with the team. Former Stanford University star has very solid stats this year. Smith is league's best scorer averaging so far 22.3ppg. Smith is in league's top in rebounds (7th best: 9.7rpg) and averages impressive 2.5bpg,2.1spg,65.0% FGP and 47.1% from behind 3-point line.

My guess is 193 is her height in cm (not weight in pounds).
47% from 3? Are we sure she couldn't sneak an extra year of NCAA eligibility in due to COVID or something?

Nice to see her have success overseas and to parlay that into another chance in the WNBA. I'm happy for our alum.

Good for Alanna! (Also good for her Stanford fans who can hope to watch her play again! If only there were a WNBA team in the Bay Area! Weird given the region's support for Womens' sports that there isn't a WNBA or WPL team in the region). By chance, I got to watch one of Sue Bird's final games last season while visiting Seattle and picked out a Stanford player on the floor as well. Can't do that in the Bay Area ...

It is weird. Very weird and I don't know how to explain it.
However, it is VERY good for Stanford WBB that there is NOT a WNBA team here. The presence of the 49ers is a major drag on Cal, Stanford, and SJSU football, for example. By comparison, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State are left with no competition and their programs are financially far more stable than teams like SJSU who play in the shadow of so many others.
And for some reason, professional basketball--men's or women's--leaves me cold. I've got almost no interest in it. I know the current situation cannot last. I predict that the WNBA will come eventually to the Bay Area, that Tara will one day retire, and that Stanford WBB will then fade into mediocrity. I am hoping that is delayed for a couple of decades so it will be irrelevant to me! Tara's mother seems very spry! Tara could have another 10 years at least, right? ;)

WNBA is expected to award a franchise to the Bay Area for the 2025 season.
