Sad news about Mike Leach -
Snorlax94 - 12-12-2022
Former Wash State Coach Mike Leach was transported to a hospital Sunday for health reasons and remains hospitalized.
I wasn’t a fan of some of his actions, and I certainly thought he would have been a poor fit for Stanford, but I wouldn’t wish ill even for a division rival who often confounded Stanford during his last years in the Pac 12.
Wishing him a speedy recovery, and thoughts to his family and the Miss State community.

Yeah, after his kicker muffed a makeable field goal that would have spoiled our 2015 season he started a string of victories against us that has now grown to six straight. His Achilles heel was (other than his first year there) he could never figure a way to beat his cross state rival.
I don't think anyone would try to argue that Wazzu had superior talent to us during that period.
Anyway, get well soon, coach.

During those years he did more with less. He was the Mike Montgomery of football. And he had Shaw's number down cold.

Big heart attack at home, and 10-15 minute delay in getting medical attention.

He certainly had a knack for beating high profile teams and then rubbing it in. As I recall, Leach burned a lot of bridges while he was at WSU, in part because of his sarcastic and demeaning treatment of players who (in his view) were underperforming. While he might have been a ‘win with less’ coach like Mike, his personality was more like Bob Huggins.

Yes, Shaw and Leach were from polar-opposite molds; and Leach knew how to be Shaw's kryptonite, even when Stanford had far superior talent. Shaw was the Eagle Scout Troop Leader and Leach was the swashbuckling pirate. When Shaw made all the rational in-game coaching decisions, Leach muddied the scene with brazen calls. He went 4-4 vs. Shaw, but all the victories came at the end of his tenure at Wazzu. Clearly, he had learned to think one step ahead of Shaw.

Shaw vs. Leach reflected broader trends. We were great against WSU, but they got better and we got worse. I think the turning point, perhaps ironically, was once the WSU defense became competent under Alex Grinch.
Similar story, BTW, wrt UCLA. We had a long winning streak against them, but UCLA under Kelley and DTR got better, while we got worse.

Now reported that Leach had a "massive" heart attack. Praying for him and his family.

Hah. I'm an Eagle Scout and my second scoutmaster (aka troop leader) ran off with the wife of my first scoutmaster.
Thoughts and prayers for Leach. May there be many fat girlfriend comments in his future.

True. But even in 2017, when we won the north division, Leach managed to pip Shaw in a tight game at Martin stadium.

You don't have many coaches who are out of the norm, especially in interviews, as was the Pirate. RIP, coach.

In the world of dull, uninteresting coaches, college and pro, guys like Harballs, McKay and Leach stand out as oddballs. Thank god for them. RIP Captain Blood.
Mississippi State ought to hire Brennan from San Jose.
