WBB: Stanford 72 -- Creighton 59 - 81alum - 12-18-2022

Preview:

Creighton is a private Catholic university in Omaha with about 5000 undergraduates, and they play in the Big East along with UConn, DePaul, St. Johns, etc.  They are ranked 16th in both the AP and Coaches poll, 22 by Massey and 19 in NET.  Creighton is 8-2 having just dropped a game Saturday to #21 Arkansas.    They have beaten South Dakota State, Nebraska, and Villanova--all three were ranked at the time.

They are coached by Jim Flanery,  in his 21st year and with 379 wins, including 5 trips to the NCAAs, including last year.  Last year they won three games in the tournament before South Carolina finally snuffed them out in the elite 8.

In short, this is a serious team with a unique style of play that consistently brings them great success.  Last year they played UConn tight in their first game, ultimately losing by 10.

At today's Tennessee chalk talk, Katy told us a little bit about Creighton.  They play a lot of 5-out fluid basketball with a lot of improvisation which is difficult to predict.  To me, they sound like a better version of Florida Gulf Coast, who we played in Hawaii, and who gave us a bit of trouble.

Creighton has played 10 different players this year, all 10 have attempted three point shots, although only 6 in any number and only 4 in volume.  If I just count those with 10 attempts, 6 out of 7 are shooting above 300 and 3 of them are shooting above 400.  In short, this is a three point shooting team extraordinaire.  That said, about 2/3 of their shots are NOT from three point range, which leads me to think that they shoot the trey when the defense sags and drive when the defense plays close.  FGCU should be excellent preparation for them.

Also interesting about Creighton is that their assists are widely distributed.  Eight players have double digit assists and three have more than 25.  It makes me think their offense is constantly churning in motion as interchangeable cogs.

Creighton has 4 players averaging about 10 points or more.

The leader, coming in at 18ppg, is 6'1" junior guard/forward Morgan Maly.  Maly is shooting .485 overall, .328 from three, and 90% (in volume) from the free throw line.

At only one point less at 17ppg is Laura Jensen, a 5'8" guard shooting .444 and .317 from three.   Jensen was a transfer from Iowa to Creighton a year ago, and she hit the last second three point shot to lead 10 seed Creighton over 2 seed Iowa in the NCAAs last year, knocking her old team out.

Next at 12ppg is Emma Ronsiak, a 6'1" junior forward shooting .387 and .359 from three.

I'll stop with a 4th starter, Molly Mogensen, a 5'7" junior guard shooting .441 from three and leading the team with 35 assists.

Sadly, I cannot find any game of Creighton's on ESPN replay to watch, other than the ESPN+ games that cost extra, so I can't comment much more than the above.  Based on the stats and the highlights (below) what we will see is Creighton starting the halfcourt offense with 5 players on the three point line, then different players streaking the the basket either to collect layups or to draw defenders away from the perimeter.  With lots of assists and lots of layups they force teams into choosing whether to guard the paint which leaves the three point shots open, or guard the perimeter which leaves them free to pass and cut to the basket.

I was able to find these highlights from their loss to St. John's a couple of weeks ago, and their loss to Arkansas Saturday.  It gives an idea of their style of play:

In the Tennessee post-game press conference, Tara compared Creighton to Utah.  "A completely different style than Tennessee."

Great preview of Stanford's next opponent.  Creighton's best athlete and most potent scorer is Lauren Jensen, the transfer from Iowa who led her team on that great NCAA Elite Eight run.  Morgan Maly and Emma Ronseik both have nice little step-back moves and can play down low, mid-range or on the perimeter.  Yes, you'll see some familiarity with FGCU but more motion offense.  Jim Flanner has been a very successful mid-major coach.  The team is not the most athletic, but they play with a high BB IQ.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Creighton Tue 7pm - 81alum - 12-20-2022

Here are a couple of articles about Creighton that have appeared recently.  After Creighton plays us, their next opponent is UConn.  The second article is a pretty good one, I thought.  The basic message:  Creighton players are not intimidated about playing us, given what they went through in the NCAAs last year.   It also notes our home floor record, and points out that UConn has only won at Maples 1 out of 5 trips.  (That surprised me--2 of those wins seem to have come before the Geno era, and UConn has not been back to Maples since our 2014 overtime win.  But it is hard for me to get the 2012 game out of my head.)

Quote:“One of our goals is to get to the NCAA Tournament, but that’s not the baseline goal,” Flanery said. “We’re going to play a team on Tuesday that expects to be in the Final Four. That’s great for us because we are going to be able to measure where we are compared to a team that expects to be in the Final Four, and probably has a better than 50% chance, maybe even better than 70% chance to get there.

Today's power rankings from The Athletic.

Don't know if it's behind a paywall, but you can try. Interesting in that highlights Cam, but also relevant to today's game since includes significant comments re Creighton, well worth reading.  Re Cam, a couple of stats I haven't seen before (see quotes below) Re Cam, among else, says Stanford is "19.6 points per 100 possessions better with Brink on the court" and "She's been an absolute monster defensively, almost disrespectful in the way she rejects shots. She was blocking 17.3 percent of opposing 2-pointers prior to the Tennessee game, per CBB Analytics, a figure that projects to increase after her career-high six blocks Sunday."

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Creighton Tue 7pm - M T - 12-20-2022

Checking the math:

Brink has 39 blocks in 241 minutes (9.7 blocks/40 min).  Opponents have hit 153 of 448 (34.2%) 2-pt shots in 485 minutes.
Assuming an even distribution of 2-pt shots by time (which seems unlikely), she would have played while about 223 2-pt shots were attempted.  Her blocks account for 17.5% of that number.

Assuming an opponent normally hits 50% of their 2pt shots, if 17.5% are blocked, that would reduce their 2PT% down to 41.3%.

Stanford has hit 270 of 487 2pt shots (55.4%).
Betts has 11 blocks in 108 minutes (4.1 blocks/40 min)

But, in the real world, the opponents will adjust their game plan and shooting to avoid such a good blocker.  They will take more 3s or alter the kinds of 2s they take.

I would expect if you went back and counted the 2PTA while Brink was on the floor, I suspect she blocks more than 17.5%.

Brink is #2 in Div. I blocks/game.  The person in front of her has played 30.5 min/game and has 4.0 blocks/game (5.2 per 40 min).  Brink has played 20.1 min/game and has 3.25 blocks/game (9.7 per 40 min).   #3 is USC's Rayah Marshall at 24.8 min/game and 3.22 blocks/game  (5.2 per 40 min)

I would imagine that even when Brink doesn't block the shot, she probably forcers the player she is defending into a more challenging shot as the shooter seeks to avoid/minimize the chance of a block.  Or, as you note, they don't shoot at all, seeking instead to avoid challenging Brink.

All that is to say that her impact is greater than simply the proportion of opponent shots blocked.

ESPN shows Stanford a 13.5 point favorite over Creighton, if I'm reading the scoreboard post correctly.

Chalk talk: look for lots of flops.  Creighton seems to have perfected that technique.

Missy.

Who was that poster insisting Lepolo is a reluctant shooter?

Lol CompSci you beat me to it. Something about a reluctance to shoot and a fundamentally flawed release that would be impossible to fix during the season...

And Haley hits one. All of our 3's are from players who supposedly can't or won't shoot from outside.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Creighton Tue 7pm - 81alum - 12-20-2022

We were told at the chalk talk that Lepolo was working on being more aggressive with her shot.

Yup.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Creighton Tue 7pm - BostonCard - 12-20-2022

Raise your hand if you had Lepolo as our leading scorer at halftime.
Raise your hand if you had Jones with 7 assists to no turnovers at halftime.
Raise your hand if you had Brink with 1 foul at halftime.

Everyone with their hands raised is a liar.
