While we were awaiting the Big Game: Rhodes scholarships - yvonne - 11-20-2011

(I decided to dispense with the trick subject line).

The Rhodes Trust announced the 2012 American Rhodes Scholars yesterday. Stanford had five selected, the most of any school this year. The organization said it was also the most in the school's history.

Harvard, Princeton, and Brown had three each.

The University of Washington had two winners. The only other western school with a winner is California State University at  Long Beach.

Impressive! Talk about that on CGD.

Tech nerds may recognize one of those names. Tenzin Seldon was one of the activists whose GMail was hacked, probably by Chinese intelligence agents, that was the ostensible reason Google chose to withdraw from China (kind of).

I think it's funny that the winner from the University of Washington has a home address on Cougar Court in Pullman.

Quote:University of Washington
Mr. Cameron W. Turtle

Pullman, WA 99163

I heard on KLIV this afternoon that with the new class, Stanford has passed the US Military Academy as fourth on the list of all time Rhodes scholars. Stanford is more than doubled by the big three of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, however.

One of Stanford's five Rhodes scholars is former T&F distance runner Kate Niehaus -

Cory Booker was a Rhodes scholar.  Any other Stanford athletes?  I could not find anything on gostanford.com
