I thought this post was about me :)

Great news.  Fingers crossed he values academics over continuity in coaching...

RE: We have another burger - PVTree - 01-26-2023

We're up to 10 burgers now. 11 if we include the poster known as burger.

Crazy that Haase now has three burgers in four years, yet still struggles to beat Chicago State.

Of note, Mike Montgomery got us to a Sweet Sixteen in 1996/97 without any burgers.

RE: We have another burger - Leftcoast - 01-26-2023

Montgomery may not have had a "burger" but he had a Brevin Knight.  He also had future NBA guys Mark Madsen and Tim Young.  That was a fun team that sent Tim Duncan home from the NCAA tournament early in his last college game.

I thought it was referring to the Rodin statues in the Quad.

They’re tall, but they don’t hustle back on defense.

Is The Thinker back on campus yet?  Used to be in front of the late Meyer Library iirc, and then for a while, it went on some visiting tour.  It might not have hustled back at all.

We also have a coach that can get the most out of its talent, including a national championship two years ago.

Helps that said talent is top 3 in the nation at worst.

(MBB's is...uh...not. There are NINE 3* players on the roster.)

Wondering how our recruits stack up against some other Pac-12's.

                  5-star  4-star  3-star  Total
Stanford          1        2        7      10
CAL                 0        2        8      10
ASU                 0        4        5        9
Colorado          0        4        5        9
Wash St           0        4        5        9
Utah                0        1        7        8

Note Maxime Raynaud & Michael Jones don't show up in the Stanford count,
because both are (underrated) as 2 stars on the sheets I checked.
If a school had a transfer and I found a Transfer rating for them, I used that instead of their HS rating.
I think there's no way you could argue that we are undermanned against these teams.
Yet we went 0-5 against them so far.

Thought experiment: Imagine that Haase was fired two weeks before the first game of the season and Mike Montgomery agreed to be the interim coach for the rest of the season. What would the team's record be at this point, and what would you imagine the overall record for the season would turn out to be?

My guess is that this team would be at least 12-8 and maybe a 4-3 conference record, and I could imagine fighting to finish around the middle of the conference.

Nothing wrong with 3* players. 1987-88 roster: Lichti, Wright, Butler, Taylor, McSweeney, Bruton, Meinert, Vlahov, Thomas, Wingate, Cunningham, Patrick, Meyer, Booker, Winkes. Looking retrospectively, Lichti was a 5. Vlahov was a 4 for his EUTM. No one else looks like above a 3. And they went 21-12 including 11-7 in conference.

Using the "transfer rating" instead of HS doesn't translate. There are just 25 4* transfers (per 247) and 130ish 4*+ HS recruits in each class. It's not the same scale. HS ratings at least keep it level.

Utah thus has 2 more 4*s (HS), ASU has another 4* (HS), Cal has another 4* (HS), and Wazzu has another 4* (HS, by 247).

We don't "out-talent" basically anyone, especially with one of our 4*s currently being redshirted. It's Harrison Ingram, Isa Silva (who doesn't even start), and an army of 3*s.

[To be clear, I also believe the team is very poorly coached. That's abundantly clear. I just don't think we actually "have the talent" people continue to think we do.]

We'd finish 30-1 and lose to an 8 seed in the second round of the Tourney.

Curious, what proportion of players are transferring every year this year.  It seems like it is probably comparable to the number of freshmen, but I don't have a good sense of it.  Of course, who are the players transferring?  I could imagine a lot are players that are disappointed in their playing time, perhaps those whose high school rating exceeded their college production (the other is also possible).

I guess my point is that you are probably right that the scaling might be off, but it could be spot on too.

One other comment about Haase.  I think you can and should be able to have a competitive basketball team with mostly solid three star players and a couple of 4* and one headliner, as Haase has.  A starting five of two three star players, two four star players and a five star player should not be near the bottom of the Pac-12.  Like, even if you look at our competitor's high school ratings, we still have comparable talent to them, not talent that would lose 0-5 to them.

By comparison, I'd probably give Montgomery's sweet sixteen team the following HS player ratings:
Brevin Knight 2* (only other offer was Seaton Hall, if I recall correctly)
Art Lee 3*
Kris Wheels 3*
Peter Sauer 3*
Tim Young 4*
(bench: Mark Madsen 4* freshman, Ryan Mendez 3*, David Mosely 3*)

It was not a more talented roster out of high school than what Haase has to work with right now.

Kris Wheels!  It’s probably a fortunate autocorrect but I love it. If it wasn’t Kris Weems nickname it should have been

Not that I disagree, but it should be noted that our starting five is NOT two three star players, two four star players, and a five star players.

It's FOUR three star players and a five star player. Silva does not start (and only played a whopping 9 minutes against Chicago State). The other four star - Jaylen Thompson - isn't even playing this season. He's redshirting.

I have no trouble believing a starting rotation of FOUR three star players and a five star player could absolutely be near the bottom of the Pac-12.
