For those, like me, who didn't know, a DMR (Distance Medley Relay) is:

Quote:Unlike most track relays, each member of the team runs a different distance. A distance medley relay is made up of a 1200-meter leg (three laps on a standard 400 meter track), a 400-meter leg (one lap), an 800-meter leg (two laps), and a 1600-meter leg (four laps) in that order. The total distance run is 4000 meters, or nearly 2.5 miles. Aside from the 400 meter segment, which is a sprint, all legs are a middle distance run. Prior to going metric, the distance medley relay consisted of a 440-yard leg, an 880-yard leg, a 1320-yard leg and a one-mile leg. The total distance for the old distance medley relay was 4400 yards and the total distance for the current metric distance medley relay is 4374.45 yards - slightly over 25 yards shorter than the old race.

The 400 is definitely a sprint; the athletes even use blocks.  I don't think the 800 is considered pure middle distance anymore. It's more of a hybrid. Runners in the 800 gun it the entire race. They don't pace themselves the way runners of longer races do. Often, 800 runners will also run either the 400 (those with more speed) or the 1600 (those with less speed, but potentially more endurance). I think the 800 is the hardest race in track and field.

Sorry to quibble, but the 800 is classic "middle distance." Along with the 1500/mile. Anything outside that range (such as 3k) is arguable. Sure the 800 is fast, but it's definitely paced. (400 is paced too, though relatively minimally. No one can run all-out the entire 400. To take an extreme example of an Olympic 200/400 great, Michael Johnson wasn't running sub-20 for the first 200 of his 400).
