WBB Stats - chimera - 01-28-2023

I looked at WBB stats from this year and last, just to see if anything was vastly different in the offense.  I did not look at turnovers or rebounding because those things do not seem to be causing most of the trouble.

The short answer to why we are wondering what is going on is our shooting in conference games has gotten much worse than pre-conference or from last season in conference.  Even scarier is that last season's stats include all the conference games and this season we still have plenty to go, so our overall stats may drop even more.

Last season (over the whole season) the team was at 73.5 ppg on 45% shooting and 35% three point shooting.  We made 7.2 threes per game.  We had 6 players who shot over 33% from three - Brink (36%), Lexie Hull (39%), Jump (40%), Lacie Hull (41%), VanGytenbeek (38%), and Demetre (33%).  In conference we were better on offense than pre-conference - 76.7 ppg, 46% shooting, and 37% from three.  That shows the offense improved as the season went on, the opposite of this season.

This season overall we are at 78.6 ppg at 46% and 33% from three with 7.4 made threes per game.  Seems similar or even better than last season!  But this season was the WCC tour or felt like it and last season was tougher non-conference.  Conference this season is at only 42% shooting and only 28% three-point shooting.  Right now we have 5 players who are shooting threes at over 33% - Jump (44%), Lepolo (42%), Bosgana (34%), Prechtel (33%), and Emma-Nnopu (39%).    Last season we had 5 players who shot over 35%.  This season we have only three so far and aside from Jump they are not shooting very many threes.  Brink was a good three point shooter last season.  She has been very open on her threes but her percentage is way down - from 36% last season to just 21% this season.  Just having Brink approach last season's numbers from three would be a big help.

Make of this all what you will.  Plenty of other stats to pick at for those who feel like it.

The question is why is shooting down so much?  Are our players less good at it (maybe) or is the offense just not getting them good shots (also maybe).  Probably it is a bit of both.  Perhaps it is that the coaches are not as confident in this season's shooters so they are hesitant to shoot, which is negatively affecting their percentages.  I certainly see players who shoot reasonably well by their percentages pass up open threes often.  The other thing I see is we are leaving players with good overall shooting percentages on the bench.  Iriafen is shooting 57%.  Betts is also at 57%.  Belibi is at 51%.  Bosgana is at 46%.  Sample size is a bit limited for some of these players but still, given that our shooting has tanked, maybe a few more minutes for them is warranted?  Maybe we should try harder to get some other shooters going when Jump is taken our of the picture by strong defenses?

Thank you for the analysis, chimera.

Last season I was tearing my hair out over missed lay-ups, but this season it seems like almost a given that if players-not-named-Cam will completely blow it. Nothing makes sense. Easiest shot in basketball and that's the one that is killing us.

Regarding the shooting percentages for Belibi, Betts, and Iriafen somewhat - the majority of their shots are from within 5 ft of the basket so the percentages would (hopefully) tend to be much higher. Not necessarily a true indication of "shooting" ability

I agree.  Just meant that they do what they do well enough that giving them more minutes may help when things are not flowing.  Iriafen has had some very good offensive games.  Belibi used to start and is capable.  Betts should be a good match-up against posts like OSU has.  We have former starters on the scout team.  Should be more use for them than that.

Yes; and the substitutions for 1 or 2 minutes make me crazy also
