WBB: Stanford 71 -- WSU 38 - 81alum - 01-31-2023

Preview:

All the games feel important now.  We head on one of more difficult road trips to face a surging team, at home, no longer with the benefit of the local Hull kids on our side.  WSU has never in its entire history beaten Stanford, and you have to believe that this is the year they think they can do it.

WSU is 15-6, 5-5 in conference.  Massey has them at 36, they are 39 in NET, and unranked.  However, their record is a bit deceptive.  Their star, Charlisse Leger-Walker, has had to return to New Zealand twice this year, and their last 4 conference losses were all at times that CLW was not available.  In contrast, they have won the last 8 games in which CLW played.  Their most notable wins were @ Arizona, @ Oregon, and @ Oregon State.

While Leger-Walker is critical to WSU's success, she no longer is the sole focus.  Those games in which she did not play--while resulting in losses--nevertheless helped build depth.  This year WSU has much more balanced scoring, and CLW does not always have to be the scoring leader.

Charlisse Leger-Walker, a 5'10" junior guard from New Zealand, is the scoring leader on average, with 19 ppg.  Roughly half of her attempts are threes, which she makes at 39%, but she also finishes well at the basket and has a pull up jumper--a true three level scorer.  She also leads the team in assists.

Bella Murekatete, a 6'3" senior center from Rwanda, is much improved this year.  She scores 14ppg on average--all from inside.  She is also their best rebounder and has an impressive number of blocks--although less than half of Brink's totals.  She has not shot a three all year.

Tara Wallack, a 6'2" sophomore guard from Canada, is also in double digits at 10ppg.  She shoots 35% from three point range but takes twice as many shots from inside the arc.  Somehow this 6'2 guard has even more blocks than Murekatete.

Johanna Tedor, a 5'8" senior guard from Estonia, is averaging 9ppg and shooting 35% from distance.

Ula Motuga, a 6'1" senior forward from Australia, has the highest shooting percentage on the team at 52%, mostly from inside, but she also can step back and hit treys at 36%.

WSU has some depth.  They have 3 bench players who get lots of minutes--and who filled in for CLW when she was gone.  Astera Tuhina, a 5'9" freshman guard from Kosovo, is getting more minutes than a couple of the starters.  She averages 7 ppg, leads the team in steals, and fills up the stat line.  Grace Sarver, a 5'8" senior guard from Seattle! is the 7th player.  They also have a 6'4" center, Jessica Clark, who gets 11 mpg.

WSU makes about 7 treys a game.  They looks possibly weak on rebounding and on turnovers.  They put 4 players on the floor that can shoot the three, and keep Murakatete inside.  Brink should be able to handle her.  Clearly we need perimeter defense, and also someone who can stand up to Motuga.  Perhaps Belibi will have a defensive role there.  I presume that Lepolo will start on CLW.

Overall, they are a tough, scrappy, international team that is the last team left in the Pac 12 that has never beaten us.  It takes both skill and fortitude for them to have swept the Oregon and Arizona schools on the road, and they get us at home.  No matter how the odds may be stacked against them, one day things will come together for them and they will no longer be 0-71.  Here is hoping that before that happens, they will be 0-72.

Marty, don’t you live out in that neck of the woods? And are you going to the game?
We need a foreign correspondent. Might that be you?

I'm about 90 minutes from Pullman.  I'll think about it.

Okay, that was easy.  I got a courtside seat right under the basket for $20 bucks.  Road trip!

I'll be the guy in the cowboy hat catching Cam and Haley when they get hacked on a fast break.

Will any other Cardboarders be attending in Pullman?

Sadly no for me. Cheer loud! I will be down in Tucson for the AZ game next week though.

Very cool, Marty, cheer Cam, Haley, Fran, and the rest on for all of us.  Let's go 72-0, baby!

Just pulled into Pullman and catching dinner just off campus.  It's clear I'm in Cougar territory, and I'm not talking about randy older ladies.

I'm brandishing my Stanford lettermen's jacket and getting some stink eye looks.

Yes, and I plan to cheer wildly if Agnes makes a good play. :)

Team looked good warming up.  Hannah was hitting every 3 pt shot.

Ledger-Walker is pretty deadly from 3 too.

Great to have the on-the-spot reports. Thanks for these, and keep them coming.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ WSU Friday 7pm - martyup - 02-03-2023

In the last warm up session we were missing a lot.  But the team is smiling and seem to be having fun.  They really seem to like each other.

Thanks @martyup!

At this point, watching on TV, I can see smiles.  Quite different from USC.  Let's hope those smiles continue for the next 35 minutes.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ WSU Friday 7pm - crackpot - 02-03-2023

Thank you, martyup. I greatly appreciate your cheering. Lookin' good!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ WSU Friday 7pm - 81alum - 02-03-2023

15-3 after one.  Our identity is now defense.  Trying to remember the last time we held a conference opponent to 3 points in a quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ WSU Friday 7pm - DaBears17 - 02-03-2023

@martyup Did you grab the end of 1Q rebound?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ WSU Friday 7pm - martyup - 02-03-2023

Our defense is smothering.  We're not getting in the flow in offense.  Our posts are posting up too far out.  WSU doesn't seem very motivated from my view, which is right near their bench.

That second foul on Cameron was BS.  Teder is a flopper.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ WSU Friday 7pm - mbdude - 02-03-2023

We can't hit a shot outside the key again this game
And ashten gets 1 minute and out. That's tough
