WBB: Stanford 96 -- Arizona State 64 - 81alum - 02-10-2023

Preview:

What do you say about playing the doormat of the Pac 12, a team that is 0-12 in league play, a team we beat 101-69 on New Year's eve?  Here is what you say: Washington.  Last weekend took us from the high of a beatdown against a good WSU team to the low of a letdown against a team we underestimated.  We can't afford another weekend like that one, no matter how feel-good the first games turned out to be.

I again won't repeat my original preview of ASU, but offer link the thread below, along with the boxscore for our first game (thanks for the suggestion, MT!)

Since our New Year's Eve game, Arizona State has lost 10 in a row, including forfeits at Utah and Colorado when they had insufficient healthy players to make the trip.  Massey has them at 94--higher than I would have expected.  NET is 118.  They play Cal tonight, which gives us the advantage of an extra day to observe and practice.

This appeared in the news on the weekend they forfeited their mountain trip:
Quote:The Pac-12 conference requires at least seven scholarship players available, and although the Sun Devils did not specify which players are out at the moment, the team has been dealing with multiple injuries. Among those injured are Isadora Sousa, Maggie Besselink, Imogen Greenslade, Morasha Wiggins and Jaylah Robinson. It's been a tough season for ASU, as the team holds a 7-11 record and has lost all seven of its conference games so far.

ASU was able to field a team to travel to LA and take on USC and UCLA last weekend, and they played 9 players, so it seems they are over the worst of the injury hump.

In their last game out, they lost 82-63 against UCLA,  but kept it fairly close through three quarters.  Tyi Skinner scored 28 points, going 6/9 from three point range.  This player will continue to be a challenge for us to guard--I doubt that we have anyone with her quickness, but suspect that Lepolo will try to corral her as much as possible.  Last time we played she scored 20 against us, even though Lepolo played a close player defense on her.  Skinner was 4/8 from three point range, with most of those threes being contested.  She is actually a very fun player to watch of the 5'5" quick variety.

Treasure Hunt scored 18 and Jadyn Simmons 10 at UCLA, which is almost identical to what those two scored against us on New Year's Eve.  At UCLA, against us, and season-long those three have been the only reliable ASU scorers.  Tara has defensive options to play with, with 5 defenders to shut down 3 primary scorers.  Then again, as Elle Ladine showed us, our scouting report defenses can have the effect of turning unknown players into stars.

It will be interesting to see how well our offense does.  In the first game, our three point shooting got hot, which meant we had the buzz saw of inside/outside options that they could not defend, resulting in 101 points.  After Tara's recent comment after Washington that "I really think I was holding us back" I wonder if she is just turning the team loose and getting them away from the carefully orchestrated offenses she has tried to install.  If so, this might be a fun game to watch.

Skinner: 28 pts, 10/19 (6/9 3p)
Hunt: 18 pt,. 6/14 (2/5 3p)
Simmons: 10 pts, 4/12 (N/A)
-------
Skinner/Hunt/Simmons: 56 pts, 20/45 (8/14 3p)
Crisp/Mokwuah/Erikstrup/Greenslade/Newman/Sousa: 7 pts, 3/14 (0-5 3p)

That's really not a lot of scoring beyond those 3 players.

Exactly.  This is the perfect set-up for a scouting report defense, sagging two players to make it harder on ASU's primary three scorers.

But as we have seen before, sometimes someone unexpected steps up when we leave them alone too much.

Our offense was off-the-charts good in our first ASU game, but our defense could have been better.  We need to play good enough defense to win even if our offense reverts for a game.

This is a game where Green could be our leading scorer. 8^)

Let us not tempt the woofing gods.  :-)

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - BostonCard - 02-11-2023

Any idea why the powers that be scheduled this game to be on Super Bowl Sunday just 40 minutes away from said game?  Seems like the better bet would have been to schedule the game today, so that the team could get out of the Phoenix metro area (and to save on paying Super Bowl Sunday hotel prices).

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - CompSci87 - 02-11-2023

WBB is 11am PT, and the Super Bowl is 3:30pm PT. So a lot more than 40 minutes apart.

But nevertheless, it might have been nicer to have WBB on Saturday.

p.s. Oh duh, I guess you mean it's a 40 minute drive between the venues.

Women's hoops is not alone. The Phoenix Open is this weekend, as well. Raucous crowd today. . . .

Yeah, that’s what I meant.  Close enough that people flying into Phoenix will be staying in Tempe and driving to the game.

At least there is probably not much going on as the women fly home.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - 81alum - 02-12-2023

So, do we have any Cardboarders at the game today?

Spike - Spike - 02-12-2023

Yes!
We’re sitting behind our bench with a bunch of others and parents. Jones family, Brinks and many others i don’t know.
Starting lineup is Bilibi, Emma, Prectel, Lepolo andNivar. Seriously!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - martyup - 02-12-2023

Her name is Agnes!!

Interesting starting lineup.  Explanations?

Maybe rewarding the bench players for great contributions in the AZ game.  Hopefully not sickness related.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - crackpot - 02-12-2023

So ASU's plan is to flop a lot?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - WBB fan - 02-12-2023

Crazy watching here. Stanford on the TV screen, LSU vs SC on the computer, stats and cardboard on the tablet. Stanford looking good so far! LSU not so much. Right now, 13-2 SC when our game is 21-7. Glad to see Betts, Fran, Kiki contributing well, and Hannah hitting.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - martyup - 02-12-2023

We got past our 20 point quarter threshold with 3:30 to play.  Now 21-7.  How about a 30 point quarter?  How about hold them to single digits in this quarter?  No mercy. GO CARD!

Skinner clearly has been influenced by Ari McDonald in her game.  She jumps into her defender when she shoots to draw a foul.  She also is always ready to make a dramatic flop.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ Arizona State Sunday 11am - Card10Fan - 02-12-2023

29 points in the first quarter and ZERO combined from Brink and Jones. Others stepping up. Our offense staying hot and carrying over from Thursday. Nice to see. 10 assists on 11 makes.
