WBB: NIL and Pressure on Players - WBB fan - 03-09-2023

Good article in SF Chron this am as part of their series re NIL - features Cam and to lesser extent Haley, also two Cal players. Makes it clear that these players have new pressures, issues to deal with, now because of NIL -- and taking advantage of it takes time. My reaction, it's great to get money, but at what cost?  And seems to me that it has to have a negative impact on their ability to play at their highest level given the time and other demands

Yeah, and those pesky classes & homework also have a negative inpact on their ability to play at their highest level….

What distraction will be skimped on?

The NCAA puts limits on game & practice time. I don’t see them being able to limit time spent on NIL commitments. What happens when Cam’s financers say she has to do an appearance in Paris during Dead Week?

Will the first person who is surprised please identify themself?

I think I overheard Captain Renault say that he was shocked that NIL deals were causing stress on student athletes... "I'm shocked! Shocked to find that NIL is causing stress to student-athletes in here." is the exact quote.

RE: WBB: NIL and Pressure on Players - WBB fan - 03-09-2023

Surprised? "Shocked"? -- anyone who is just isn't thinking clearly, and for any collegiate athlete who also takes being a student seriously, as we want to believe is the case for all those at Stanford, this was an obvious result. It's hard enough to be both a student and athlete and do well at both.

What happens? Cam says no. Or she makes sure her endorsers understand what’s on or off limits when inking deals. Let’s remember these are kids who were intelligent enough to get into Stanford. Give them some credit. And regarding the concern that NIL will undermine performance - let’s wait for some proof before all the worry.

Thank you Cooter.

RE: WBB: NIL and Pressure on Players - M T - 03-09-2023

“C’mon Cam, this is critical for your future maketability in Europe. I’d say may 10 million over the next decade, maybe more.  I have you scheduled to meet some movie producers and some top modeling agents. And we’ll fly you first class both ways, so you can study while you sip champagne. We’ll have you back by Sunday at noon, plenty of time for your first final on Monday. And, you can bring along a friend or your mom, so you can really do Paris!”

Of course, I am just using Cam as a placeholder for any top player, but you get the idea.  Our Cam would of course say no to anything that might impact her studies.

RE: WBB: NIL and Pressure on Players - old spanish trail - 03-09-2023

Agree, Cooter.  These kids don't spend all their "off hours" studying. Stanford students will suffer much less than others for time "lost" because of NIL. I do worry about where NIL is taking amateur sports, btw.

RE: WBB: NIL and Pressure on Players - Cooter - 03-09-2023

$10 million for an NIL deal would change the equation for anybody :). Agree with Spanish Trail - amateur sports as we knew them are changing… And while I think reasonable people can bemoan the loss of the old system, I personally struggle to mourn changes to a system that has been fundamentally unfair to young adult athletes. I know this topic has been beaten to death in other posts…

BTW - I don’t post often but generally love this forum and appreciate the thoughtful participation. Could do without some of the hysteria after a few losses though ?

I agree that the system has been unfair to athletes in the revenue sports like MBB and FB, but how is it unfair to those who can get a paid-for college education in non-revenue sports?

I’m not sure the distinction matters. Why would a non-rev athlete not have the right to benefit from their name/image/likeness?

RE: WBB: NIL and Pressure on Players - BillBradley - 04-08-2023

Resurrecting this thread for this post on NIL...

This recent article connects the growth in popularity of womens hoops to NIL deals. Here's an excerpt:

"NIL Deals Skyrocket in Women's Basketball: NIL deals for women's college basketball athletes grew 186% in 2022 – clocking in with the second highest percentage of new deals behind football, fueled in part by surging viewership (+11% YoY on ESPN) – compared to a 67% increase in deals for men's basketball athletes. The average female basketball player partners with three brands, versus two for men."

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/womens-basketball-and-college-football-dominate-the-nil-industry-in-2022-23-301778009.html

There are lots of NIL opportunities for popular female hoopers, and the players are realizing there's brobdingnagian money in increasing their followers. Angel Reese has picked up 100's of thousands of followers for being on the big stage and one-upping Caitlin Clark. Would that have happened if she had stayed at Maryland? The money is out there for Haley Van Lith - she just has to make the move and grab it. She already has 800K followers and Paige Bueckers doubles that number. It's possible all these players (Bueckers, Clark, Reece, Brink, Van Lith...) use their extra year of eligibility to stay in college where they'll make way more than the WNBA.

And why would the schools pay them even more through their own NIL collective? Brand exposure. If you don't think the UConn womens team or the Gonzaga mens team has increased the popularity of those universities you're smoking something. It's hugely valuable what Caitlin Clark does for the University of Iowa. And this doesn't even count the schools share of TV money, which down the road will be renegotiated big time. Didn't used to be this way in women's hoops but it is now. Follow the money folks!  And yes, our mighty Card will be the big loser in the equation. Just ask Lauren Betts and Harrison Ingram.

RE: WBB: NIL and Pressure on Players - chimera - 04-08-2023

Van Lith transferring is interesting.  She was a star at Louisville and must have already gotten plenty of NIL money.  Louisville is a good team that wins.  They play in a big arena with a lot of fans.  The style of play suits her.  She is an All-American, after all.  Her coach is not known to be abusive or an ass to his players as far as I know.  So all that wasn't good enough?  What more could she want?  I am not criticizing.  I am not in her shoes.  I am wondering why when a player is in that great position, she would feel the need to leave.
