Cal MBB hires another former Stanford player? -
OutsiderFan - 03-26-2023
How do y'all feel about the author of the greatest moment in your history of watching Stanford MBB - AND HE WAS FOULED - becoming Cal's MBB coach? That's what's being reported.
And then how do you feel about it while Stanford has a former Cal player as it's MBB HC, while Cal has a former Stanford player as its WBB HC, and Stanford football has a former Cal player as its HC?
Seems a little weird to me.

I wish Madsen a ton of luck, except when he plays us; he will need it. Happy he landed a P5 job, but of course wish it were a job that came with more support.

Note, I haven’t seen news that he’s been hired yet; just that he may be the leading candidate.

I would expect it is an interesting choice for him, if indeed he has been "offered". Decline and hope Stanford wants a new coach after next year, or accept and therefore not be available if indeed Stanford is looking next year? I would also think he might look at Cal's recent history and wonder if Cal would be a good place to be for his P5 debut.

Assuming he is hired….
How odd is this -
Had Wilcox lost his job after the ‘21 season, Taylor would have been the leading candidate to replace him. Instead, a year later he is hired by Stanford.
Had Haase lost his job after this season, Madsen would have been a leading candidate to replace him. Instead, he is hired by Cal.
The crossover of coaching talent is no surprise. It is all about hiring the best person you can find regardless of where they went to college.
Add Esquer to the mix…..

No guarantee that Haase is fired next year (I mean, he should be, but Muir has been uniquely reluctant to let underperforming coaches go), nor is it a guarantee that if Haase were let go that we would hire Madden. And lastly your last statement could also apply to Stanford.

Totally agree. That certainly makes it harder for Madson to predict the future and make a decision.

Also true. While one might hope Madsen would have some greater affection for Stanford, how much that really counts in his decision making process is hard to know. One might also ask how much it should. Both Cal and Stanford have ADs that seem to be teflon coated but who are also catching a lot of flack from the fans/alumni. If they hire you, you really don't know how long they will stay around and to what degree they will support your "rebuilding" (yet again) the program if they do. Their previous long leash may of necessity become a very short one. I can see good reasons to stay away from either job. OTOH, if you really believe you can do it, can you pass up the chance?

The SI report cited the Chronicle story I posted previously. As far as I am aware, there are not yet any confirmatory independent reports. That seems a bid odd at this point, but obviously proves nothing.

Doesn't seem odd to me. His team is still playing in the NIT. Once their season is over, I expect him to take the job (he would say he's not interested if he was declining it). This one will hurt...I don't want to see Mad Dog on a weenie sideline.

Only if Madsen leads Cal back to respectability.

I agree that it is to be expected that he would not accept the offer while his current team is still playing. What I think is odd is that only the Chronicle is reporting he has been offered, at least AFAIK. Si just cited that report. I kind of would expect others would have checked their "sources" and reported it as well, if indeed the offer has been made. There are lots of reports today that he is the top candidate, including the Mercury, but not yet saying he has been offered.

Because he didn’t fire Haase to hire a new head coach with a worse head coaching record than Haase had when he was hired?
I love Mad Dog, but I’m far from convinced that hiring Haase 2.0, albeit with a Stanford degree, is the best solution.
But, of course, we all know that it’s all Dawkins’ fault…

No, because he didn't fire Haase after failing to make the tournament after seven years and because he missed an opportunity to hire a Stanford legend with quality HC experience who could put some butts in seats to help bridge the 8-figure AD budget deficit that is a product of his fiscal mismanagement.

No, it's 100% Muir's fault. Over and over and over again.

Hard to make a comparison, but UAB was already a Conference USA team with multiple NCAA appearances when Haase took over. He had a run in the tourney (first appearance on his four years) and was a hot commodity because his team upset Iowa State. We didn't hire him until after the next season when he was upset in the C-USA tournament and lost to BYU in the NIT. Mike Davis, the guy before Haase, took Texas Southern to the tourney 4 times after he left.
Madsen has done more with less. Utah Valley outperforms its talent, and it was a dominant rebounding and efficient team all season. The only reason Utah Valley didn't go dancing was a pair of four points plays and a bit of a collapse in the last three minutes of a conference tournament game. As it is, Madsen did something Haase couldn't do, beat Colorado (not only that, but in Colorado).

I have a hard time believing there isn't
someone out there better for Stanford than Haase, and Madsen is probably one of them.
But 4 star recruit, Covid was bad, reasons....
What an interesting dynamic at Cal. Seems Monty has their ear. Madsen can move back to Danville. No way can I root against him.
Looks like continued dark times for MBB on the Farm.

Time will tell how the sequence of events that have played out these last few weeks will look 10 years from now. Perhaps Madsen will flop at Cal and Haase will somehow magically pull a rabbit out of the hat and reverse a seven-year pattern of futility. If both of those things come to fruition, Muir's decision will be on the right side of history.
What is unmistakable at present day is that if Muir had fired Haase and hired Madsen, he would have instantly reignited interest in a program that has been in the doldrums for nearly two decades. It would've been a PR homerun.
PR homeruns don't necessarily translate to wins on the playing field/court but they give the AD a much longer leash when things go wrong. As it stands, if Madsen has success at Cal and Haase continues to flounder, it will likely be the blackest of black marks on Muir's tenure that has already proven to be a disaster.
RE: Cal MBB hires another former Stanford player? -

While there undoubtedly would have been a PR bump, I find it hard to believe that there would have been a large number of new folks — that is folks other than old, die hard season ticket holders who already buy them — who would shell out for season tickets just to see Mad Dog stand on the sidelines. And, of course, changing coaches risks losing what appears to be a decent recruiting class, who, for whatever reason, like Haase, but who were not even born when Mad Dog won his forever place in our hearts…
As for how things work out in the future, I agree entirely that the respective results will tell who was right and who was wrong. Along those lines, I may be misremembering this, but I seem to recall that there was at least some push on this board for hiring Mark Fox for Stanford a few years back…

I will point to the recently resurrected Valparaiso coaching post to note that just because we loved a guy as a Stanford player and he is currently a head coach elsewhere, doesn't mean he will be a successful head coach.
Time will tell on Madsen, but I wish him luck; I hope he is successful.

He’s gonna need it. If you think the AD and Administration is a problem at Stanford it pales to what is going on at Cal.
