No effin' way I EVER root against Madsen - gailtate - 04-01-2023

ESPECIALLY when he's playing Muir's team.

RE: No effin' way I EVER root against Madsen - OutsiderFan - 04-04-2023

I strongly encourage you to not watch his intro presser in Berkeley if the fact he was not hired at Stanford bothers you.

But, after watching it myself, it may very well be that Madsen didn't want to coach at Stanford. He made very clear that he is embracing NIL and the transfer portal in a very big way that may not be available to him at Stanford?

Madsen speaks - gailtate - 04-04-2023

Gotta hope that Bernie and his betters are listening. Carefully.

Madsen embraces the notion that Cal will compete in the name, image and likeness (NIL) part of recruiting and retaining players.

“The truth of the matter is if you are not in name, image and likeness, it’s going to be very difficult for you to compete at a high level,” Madsen said. “That’s the reality.”

Oh, I am well aware. He's going to do for weenie hoops what Monty did as an escapee to Berkeley. And a lot more. And I'm gonna LMAO. #MuirMustGoAndTakeMTLwithHim

RE: Madsen speaks - BostonCard - 04-04-2023

What he said is a truism.  The question is whether the current Wild West incarnation of NIL as a way of "recruiting and retaining players" is compatible with the values of an elite educational institution.  I haven't given up hope that after a few years there will be a way to sort out the good (allowing student athletes to retain and profit from their NIL) while reining in the bad (using NIL as a façade that allows pay-to-play inducements and makes a mockery of any remote idea that collegiate athletics is anything but a poor faccimile of professional athletics loosely affiliated with an ostensibly educational institution).

But if we follow the direction of travel to its logical conclusion, I'm out.

I seriously doubt that, my friend. You've too much invested to quit. Your level of involvement may decrease, there may be a shift away from NIL sports, but you'll still follow Stanford sports in particular, and college sports in general. So much of college sports has nothing to do with money, that's what makes college (and all sports), great.

How can he not? His cupboards are bare.

Yeah, I've been wondering about that myself.  Will NIL be a contagion that eventually effects all sports or is it just going to target Football, MBB, and, to a lesser extent, WBB?  I really, really don't want Stanford to be a school where I'm just rooting for Cardinal colored laundry and WILL quit supporting any Stanford sport where the laundry wearers are no longer also Student-Athletes.

So how deep will the contagion reach?  And, does the AD and University leadership have a plan?

Already started in W Golf and women's gymnastics for two. But not an entirely undesirable effect for Stanford: NIL allows stars like Rose Zhang and Cameron Brink and Haley Jones to stay and compete longer in college without having to choose between college and riches.

Hopefully not very deep, and obviously not.

I've not heard of athletes in the Olympic sports getting promises of large NIL deals, though someone mentioned something for women's gymnastics. My daughter just received her first invite to a junior day at an academically renowned school with an okay program. NIL never has even entered into her thought process. Doubt she even knows what it is. . . .

I believe that Georgia Tech’s highest NIL earner last year was a women’s volleyball player.

Have you seen their football team play recently. . . .Good for her!

Congrats on your daughter, Card Crimson!

A lot of water to flow, but thanks. Looking at my athletic ability and my wife's, too, never did I ever expect my daughter to have a shot a playing a sport at a D1 level. Still a long way to go. Will be an interesting process.

Just to connect to the thread, Madsen and I have a lot in common. Same birthday (different year, obviously), same elementary school, same junior high school, same high school, same college. Though I think i'm a better dancer, but not really sure about that.

Looks like those rooting for Madsen will be pleased with the results.

Someone on Cal board in response to the tweet: it's so great to have a former Stanford player resurrecting Cal MBB, while a former Cal player drives Stanford MBB into the ground.

Madsen has apparently put together a pretty highly regarded coaching staff.

Madsen also got a top transfer from Texas Tech to sign with Cal somehow.

What is Jared Hasse doing to make sure Stanford isn't surpassed by Cal in MBB?

Have the tree-sitters signed-off on this?

That transfer transferred to Texas Tech from...checks notes...Utah Valley, where he played for Madsen.

I think his post was referring to Jaylon Thompson who was at Texas then Texas Tech

not Fardaws Aimaq, who was Thompson's teammate at Texas Tech, Aimaq did play at Utah Valley before going to Texas Tech

What makes it a little convoluted is Julia Bergmann was born in Germany.   She grew up in Brazil, I believe now has Brazilian citizenship, and is part of the Brazilian National Team program.  She's not a U.S. citizen which shouldn't matter for NIL deals.  I give her props because she jeopardized her standing with the Brazilian coaches to take time off to pursue a physics degree at Georgia Tech.

When it comes to recruiting the best WVB prep players Stanford still gets the best in the country based on its academic reputation.  I'm assuming there is no big NIL money going into Stanford WVB.
