WWP: #1 Stanford vs #2 USC: Keeping the streak alive? - M T - 04-08-2023

On Saturday, the #1, undefeated Cardinal women’s water polo team visits the #2 USC team. This is the only meeting of the year between the two in conference, so it will decide who is the #1 seed in the conference tourney (which will decide who is the #1 seed in the national tourney).

Stanford squeaked by USC 11-10 in late February in Irvine.  The two teams have won the national title the last 12 times. Stanford has beaten Cal three times and UCLA once this year.   USC’s only loss was to Stanford.

The game will be live streamed by USC at 1pm Saturday.

Well, filled with dread and disappointment about WBB, I tuned in to the fourth quarter of W water polo.  I shouldn't have.

Watched the third, and we didn't look sharp. Our defense seemed out of sorts--a lot SC opportunities where our goalie had little to no chance. Must have been a dismal fourth, outscored 1-5. Looking at the stats, steals 3-9 and assists 5-11. Apparently, little tough defense and the offense wasn't clicking, either.

What's even more of a bummer, is their recruiting class seems to be really, really good, too.

Ugh.

Hopefully they had an off day today.

Stanford was down 1 goal going into the 4th.  USC won the sprint in each quarter, giving them the first possession. IIRC, the first 3 possessions of the 4th were scores, leaving USC up 2.  Stanford started taking chances and most didn’t work. When Stanford got down 3, it would have taken perfect play to get back even. When they got down 4, there was too little time left.

It did seem the defense didn’t work as well as expected. Several of the USC goals were when someone was wide open. To my untrained eye, Stanford players were often out of position on defense. (There was an extended period after the early 3 goals by USC where the defense held USC scoreless for 7 minutes or so.)

The conference tourney will be in San Jose while the NCAA tourney will be in Stockton. So no home pool advantage there.

Is there a good reason why water polo has not done away with sprints after the first quarter and just alternate starting possession for each quarter thereafter?
