WTEN: Stanford at Pac-12's -
Lorcan - 04-27-2023
It's an odd year in Pac-12 Women's Tennis as UCLA and USC are an unfamiliar 5 and 6 seed at the Pac-12 tournament - and #4 seed Washington just bounced the Bruins 4-0 and await the winner of #1 Stanford and #9 Arizona in the semifinals.
Stanford taking the court now with the doubles.
1. Blokhina/Blake 3-3*
2. Choy/Yepifanova 4-2*
3. Ma/Xu *3-2
I really miss ColoradoTree's writeups - and I really hope they come back at some point. I mainly wanted to make people aware that this is going on right now.
Blake and Blokhina win 6-4 on #1, but Choy and Yepifanova squander 2 match points on court 2 and we're level at 5-5 there. Ma and Xu continue to battle at 4-4. Doubles point very much still in play for Arizona.

I don’t follow closely enough to do a detailed write up or create a new thread but I’ll note here that the men received the #4 seed and knocked off #5 Cal in the quarters this morning. Presumably they’ll face #1 USC in the semis who they lost to during the regular season, 2-4.

Stanford takes the doubles point as Ma/Xu win 6-4 on #3, on to singles.

Wow! We won a doubles point! =)
Thanks for the update, Lorcan

It's slightly concerning that Sara Choy isn't playing singles today as Emma Sun gets a go at #6. It could be a precaution given that Choy played doubles or we're just that confident that we'll beat Arizona. The lineup is as follows.
1. Yepifanova
2. Ma
3. Blake
4. Blokhina
5. Xu
6. Sun

Stanford is currently ranked #8 in the country and it needs to win the P12 tournament to protect seeding in that neighborhood. A loss could knock Stanford down a few places given that the only other P12 teams ranked in the top 25 are UCLA at 20, ASU at 22 and Washington at 23. Cal is 26 and USC is 28.

Stanford beat Arizona, 4-1.
Yepifanova, Blake, and Blokhina won in straight sets at # 1, 3, and 4.
Sun lost in straight sets at # 6.
Ma (# 2) split the first two sets, and was up a break in the third set.
Xu (# 5) won the first set and was tied 5-5 in the second set.

Is Yepifanova now our #1?

We’ve been playing different #1’s in matches this season and it seems to be a rotation between Blake, Ma, and Yepifanova.

Yepifanova is 8-0 playing #1.
Ma is 9-1 playing #2.
Blake is 11-0 playing #3.
Looks like the top 3 should be pretty well set now.

Yepifanova won at #1 and Blokhina won at #4. So the score is now 3-0.
Ma (#2) and Blake (#3) dropped their second sets and are into their third sets.

Men also won their dubs point vs SC. Singles just underway. For some reason our Indoor champion and usual #2 seed Nishesh Basavareddy is out of the lineup…maybe an injury??? Probably long odds to come out on top even with the 1-0 advantage.

Stanford vs USC at 3 pm today for the championship. The match will be broadcast live on the P12 Network.
A month ago, Stanford eked out a 4-3 win over USC. Stanford won the critical doubles point and needed Yepifanova to survive a match point in the 2nd set before she pulled out a 3rd set win.
However Blake played #1 and Yepifanova played #3 in that match.
