WWP: 2023 NCAA CHAMPIONS (NC #133) -
M T - 05-11-2023
The
Women's Water Polo championships started in Stockton today.
Stanford's first game will be at noon on Friday against Biola (a private Christian school in La Mirada, CA, with about 3500 students).
See the
NCAA site for video and schedule.
Since it is Mother's Day on Sunday, I don't think I'll be going to see it in person.

UCLA overcame a three goal deficit to win by two. Was hoping for the upset. . . .

And Cal goes down to Princeton. Princeton, I think only the second team to make the semis from outside CA. Great job Tigers!

Stanford up 7-6 at the half in the semis vs. UCLA. A game of runs. UCLA up 3-1, then Stanford up 6-3, then UCLA tied it. UCLA blocked a Stanford penalty shot or else it would be a 2 goal lead.

On to the finals! Stanford wins 14-9.

UCLA very aggressive in the final three minutes but it didn't help. Stanford wins 14-9.

Really impressed how deep the team is, or at least, how Tanner rotated through the players. Heard at least a dozen or more names called out during the game, great to see so many getting playing time in such a big game.

With a four goal lead, Stanford was playing the clock, not UCLA at the time. Kill time on offense, play tough D. It worked well.

They even extended it to a 5 goal lead!
As it happened, I started watching on my phone when it was 12-8 with about 4 or 5 minutes left. Then my stream hung after the timeout with 3 minutes left and I missed the rest, sigh.

A reminder: the game will be on ESPNU at 7PM PDT Sunday. I doubt it will be carried by the NCAA site as were the first 2 rounds.
Up by that much, that late, pretty much means the game is over and it is garbage time. UCLA put a field player in as goalie and left an open goal when on offense. Stanford had a chance for a long shoot at an open goal with about 3 minutes left, but smartly played to keep the ball. Stanford got a late goal against a field player as goalie.
The drama was much earlier. UCLA got up 3-1 early, but then Stanford took over with 5 straight goals. But then UCLA scored 3 straight, tying it up with 30 seconds left in the first half. But Stanford got a goal with 7 seconds left. 7-6 at the half.
I was out shopping so I missed the first part of the 2nd half. As with CS87, I tuned back in when it was 12-8, missing Stanford's 5-2 run. Apparently Stanford again got up by 3 (9-6) only to have UCLA score the next two (9-8) but Stanford scored 3 straight goals to make it 12-8. It wasn't over at that point, but UCLA would have needed a really strong finish. Stanford held them in check.
I did go back and watch the 23-0 shutout. I wonder if that was the first shutout in the NCAA tourney. Biola had their chances, mostly lobs that didn't quite make it in the net. What says the most about Stanford's defense is that Biola had 9 power plays and didn't score. It isn't that Stanford pulled a UConn: Stanford played 25 players, with 12 scoring. But just being in the NC championship is remarkable for a 2nd year team, obviously with players pulled from other schools.
I was surprised USC beat Fresno State by only 12-8 in the quarters. I'd think that would be too close even if USC was playing their subs. (WP doesn't keep playing time). USC had no trouble beating Princeton 18-8 in the semis. Princeton only had 3 loses for the year going into that game.

UCLA pulled their goalie and went 7 on 6. Works well, until it doesn't. When Stanford got the ball, the field player in net had no chance.

The commentator said that it was Stanford's first shut out in years (I think he said 7), pretty amazing. Stanford's back up goalie Jackie King played the last three quarters, apparently.

Up 4-1 after Q1 in final over USC.

Following in line stats. They had U$C with 2 goals at first, them corrected it to 1.
RE: WWP: NCAA championships -

Remember, the game is on ESPNU.
Defense has been good but USC has mostly been shooting high. A couple of fast breaks led to goals for Stanford. USC had a fast break but shot was blocked.
RE: WWP: NCAA championships -
PVTree - 05-14-2023
Second quarter suxed. 4-4 at the half.
RE: WWP: NCAA championships -
M T - 05-14-2023
Half: 4-4
Great saves by both goalies..
IIRC:
USC 8x 6-on-5
Stanford 4x 6-on-5 (but two were 6-on--4 for about 5 seconds)

You noticed the discrepancy in the exclusions as well. That and pulling a Stanford goal off the board. Let the play continue.
