Rowing: Women win Pac-12s, Men's varsity win bronze - fullmetal - 05-15-2023

The #4-ranked Stanford women's rowing team won the Pac-12 women's rowing championships last Sunday at Dexter Lake in Oregon.  With the exception of the second varsity eight, the Stanford women entered and won every race available.  The second varsity eight finished with a silver medal, about 2.5 seconds behind the University of Washington.  With the conference team points victory, Stanford will receive the Pac-12's automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA championship regatta, where they will face the rest of the 22-team field, specifically looking to upset #1 Princeton, #2 Texas, #3 Yale, and all other contenders to win it all.

Also at Dexter Lake, the #8-ranked Stanford men raced to a fourth place team finish at the Pac-12 men's rowing championships on the strength of two bronze medal finishes from the first varsity eight and the second varsity eight.  Notably, the (first) varsity finished a half-second behind silver medal Washington, who are an extremely fast crew (#3 ranked nationally).  Stanford's varsity was about 4.3 seconds behind first-place kal, which was the margin between the two crews two weekends ago at the Big Row (dual meet) in Redwood City.  The kal varsity eight is ranked #1 and the current defending national champion, having returned all of its crew from last year.

The second varsity recorded a time in the low 5:50s, which is a very fast time compared to historical Stanford second varsities.  Note that Oregon State finished ahead of Stanford with a third-place team finish on the strength of their third varsity and varsity four entries.  Stanford could not enter those events, as the team continues to rebuild the roster after the near-cancellation of the sport during the 2020 pandemic (two recruiting classes lost, etc).  Stanford will gear up for final exams while preparing for the 2023 Intercollegiate Rowing Association championship in three weekends.

The men's write up is so deceptive. There are only four men's rowing teams in the PAC-12...

Technically, there are only four varsity men's programs in the Pac-12.  UCLA actually won a tightly contested club national championship this weekend at the ACRA (club-only) championship regatta.  I suspect UCLA would be very close to Oregon State in speed but not ahead.  Oregon, Washington State, UC-Berkeley lightweights, Arizona State, Colorado, and USC all sent club rowing entries to the ACRA championship this weekend.  

Non-Pac 12 west coast men's entries at the ACRA championship included UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and Orange Coast College.  I think I remember seeing Sonoma State and Humboldt State fielding teams in the past, but they were not present this year.

Finally, non-Pac 12 varsity programs include University of San Diego, Santa Clara, Gonzaga, and UC San Diego.
