Stanford in Wimbledon -
JJJ - 07-04-2023
I just happened to have the TV on and they talked about this young man Arthur Fery who is from Wimbledon, plays tennis for Stanford, and making his "homecoming debut" of sorts... who knew? (Obviously, those who follow the sport knew, but not the casual fan, I think.)

Thanks JJJ. I've always found it odd how little interest is paid to men's tennis on this board in comparison to women's tennis. The women's more recent titles and contributions from diligent posters on the women's side likely play a role but there are many good stories on the men's side.
Fery lost in straights to Medvedev today but I thought acquitted himself very well against one of the world's best. Was really cool to see ESPN give some screen time to the five other Stanford players who made it out to Wimbledon to support Arthur.

I must admit it's due to ColoradoTree's great updates on the women's team, but I agree that the men's team doesn't get as much attention as they deserved. Was rooting for Fery, but tough draw against the #3 player in the world. I only saw highlights and even though it was straight sets, it looked like it was pretty competitive.

Even with the success of our women's team, I keep looking at tennis results, hoping to recognize a name (man or woman) as a Stanford alum, to no avail.
It's only on these rare instances, such as Fery at Wimbledon, that it happens.
Of course, the best players don't go to college, but I hope that some of our better players would at least be in the hunt for the quarterfinals once in a while.
