MLB Draft - OutsiderFan - 07-09-2023

Was watching ESPN talk about Tommy Troy and they showed this stat:

Troy has faced a 95+ MPH 48 times. He has never swung and missed. That seems crazy, but is what the stats indicate.

Sure would like to see the Giants draft him, but odds are he goes higher.

The Giants draft 16

The LSU players go 1-2

Bradfield’s my choice….

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 07-09-2023

D-Backs, Bob….

SF selects a two-way player in round one for the second year in a row.

Bryce Eldridge.

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 07-09-2023

Well it was just an A. Lol
Eldridge is a 6-7 233 lb from a VA HS committed to Alabama.
Baseball America says great raw power but swing and miss also. Hits 96 P or 1B his running speed is poor

Giants second pick is Walker Martin a big time hitting SS. Hit 636 with 20 HRs at his Colorado HS. Downside he played the season at age 19

He hit .566 as an 18 year old junior with 9 home runs and .456 as a 17 year old sophomore with four home runs. He led the team in doubles, triples, home runs and RBIs as a sophomore. So at least he has linear development.

He fielded .827 as a soph, .884 as a junior and .860 as a senior

Why would this matter? It's not like his age on draft day is going to have any impact on how he develops as a prospect.

It sounds like the Giants did pretty well for themselves. I agree with a comment I saw on McCovey Chronicles. LHP Joe Whitman from Kent State is who the Giants got for losing LHP Carlos Rodon as Free Agent. It seems he probably has more upside than whoever the Giants would have received in exchange for trading Rodon last year.

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 07-10-2023

A 19 year old playing against players several years younger could inflate his stats. The stats are the question not how he might progress

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 07-10-2023

Cole Foster SS from Auburn was the Giants 3rd round pick

Next pick Maui Ahuna the Tennessee SS who looked so good against Stanford

He was born in February 2004.  He will be 20 in his first full year in the minors.  That would definitely be on edge of the age spectrum for highly regarded prospects at the Class A level.  If he advances quickly, he can catch up to his peers.

How?  Have you seen Whitman pitch?  Do you know whom the Giants could have received in return?

Statistically, Whitman has less than a 50% chance to make the major leagues.

I enjoy all the draft  stuff. But for the vast majority of us, most of these are just names with numbers. And statistically, most of them will never see the major leagues.

You mean like some players on our team?

RE: MLB Draft - BobK - 07-11-2023

“ could inflate his stats”. That was my point.

Point well taken, Bobb. If you look at  prospect lists, one of the things sometimes taken into account is age.  For example. Vaun Brown’s  stats get “discounted when he’s playing High A at 24.  Conversely, Matos at 21 was a couple years younger than average AA or AAA player.  So, when he ripped it up this year at Richmond and Sac , it was that much more impressive.
