Now that we're down to a Pac 4, there is no conference anymore. Without any apparent interest in joining one of the power conferences, it looks likely to the Mountain West. Stanford is now a mid-major.
Maybe that's good.

Maybe consistent winning records across all revenue sports now
I hope for our recruits, they join the Big10/12/ACC/whatever at this point

You don't know yet how the story will end for Stanford. Why not wait a few months and see how things unfold.

Stanford fan since the 1980s, enjoyed the glory years with the Rose Bowl times. Lots of fantastic memories and tailgaters.
I have to say that Stanford needs to think about their students lives, not chasing cash, doled out by media companies. If the Big Ten calls, I say, hang up. If you need to have football, become a mid major centered on the West Coast.
Of course, there will be massive restructuring of athletics at Stanford, but they will survive it. When the shit hits the fan with the TV networks in a couple of years, you will have maintained your dignity and treated your students well. Stanford, and Cal for that matter don’t need football. A lot of these other programs making the jump need football to feel respectable.
I think it’s time for Stanford to make a stand on this position, maintain their independence from the media conglomerates. Decisions made for money only never work out. Stanford is a world class academic institution first. Don’t let the tail wag the dog any more. If you need professional football, the Niners aren’t moving anywhere!

the PR team is now on the case...nothing to fear...
Quote:We are aware of the University of Oregon and University of Washington's intended departure from the Pac-12 Conference. Our primary focus at this time is analyzing the available options and making the best decisions for Stanford and our student-athletes. If that is all they have to say they shouldn’t bother.

Cmon guys. Glass half full. I think we got a good chance of picking up some Pac 4 football titles sooner than we thought.

I had to laugh at Dennis Dodd's statement yesterday that the B1G did not want to be the ones who were seen to kill the Pac 12.
In practice, the B1G paused to catch its collective breath after taking USC/UCLA, but once Colorado was gone the B1G resumed their predation. At this point they no longer needed to bother wiping their fingerprints off the knife.
The Podcast of Champions made a good point in their podcast yesterday: the Pac 10 and Big 10 had a couple of long-time commissioners (Delaney and Hansen) who between served almost 60 years in their respective positions. If they were still on the job it's unlikely that the raid on USC/UCLA would have happened. Instead we got a couple of short-timers (Kevin Warren forced out after 3 years; George Kliavkoff has been on the job for about 2 years, and seems to have
been woefully out of touch with the member schools.)

This is a terrible take. Why should we be accepting a state of irrelevancy in college athletics. Stanford should be competing at the highest level, against the best competition and winning National Championships. That is the type of Stanford athletic program that we all want and should be striving towards.
Still holding out hope for a Big 10 invite eventually. In the meantime, no idea what will happen.

TV money raises the tide and lifts all boats. W/out decent TV money this severely damages ALL sports, not just football. IF we fall into worst case scenario this could change our university culture. Stanford is not the same without a thriving sports culture befitting of such a fine university.

I say form a conference of one, win it every year, and DEMAND inclusion in the playoffs.
That's how it's done now, right?
R.I.P. Pacific Coast Conferences. And eff you USC.
Hopefully when the lamest of duck (with a small "d" - Oregon is off to the races) administration slinks off into the Eucalyptus, real leaders will emerge and save Stanford from becoming a really wealthy research intensive version of San Jose State or Claremont-McKenna. Not that there is anything wrong with those schools. They just never won Rose Bowls.

You don’t need $60M/year to operate a big time athletic department. At some point, the money goes to excessive salaries and over-the-top facilities.
Stanford is getting far less than that now and is doing reasonably well financially.
